Riviera Maya

FI and I are booking our honeymoon to Riviera Maya in a few days.   We will be staying at Now Jade (all inclusive).  We aren't set on needing to do many activities off site but we may want to do 1 or 2 things while we are there.

Is there anything you would really recommend in the area?  Also, what is typically the cheapest way to book these extra activities?

On our last vacation there we went to the Tulum ruins.  It was a great trip and very inexpensive.  We took a collectivo (local vans that work like cabs).  We just waited by the main road in front of the hotel and got one (they run often).  We took it to the town of Tulum and walked down the street to the ruins.  The collectivo was $3 each and I'm not positive on the ruins, but I think it was around $25 - $30 total.  It was great because we could explore at our own pace, plus it didn't cost a whole lot.  A lot of people recommend Chichen Itza, but it's a full day excursion, which we didn't want to do.
  • I agree with PP, Tulum is a great place to go and inexpensive from what I remember.  That is the only place I went off of the resort in Riveria Maya though so I can't suggest anything else.

  • I just got back from my honeymoon in Riviera Maya.  We went on a zip lining adventure.  I think the name of the place was called salvatica.  It was around $98 per person.  You do one hour zip lining from tree to tree (I think 12 in total), a quick stop at a tarzan swing, then about a half hour swimming in a cenote (sink hole) where you can jump off the edge or zip line into it.  They also give you lunch (chicken fajitas, rice and beans) and unlimited beer and soda during lunch.  I loved it, it took about maybe 5 hours total from the time they pick you up till they drop you off and it was well worth the money spent!

  • We are going to the area in July and are planning a trip to the Coba ruins. They are some of the largest and are the only ones in the area that actually let you climb the pyramids. The view from the top is amazing, I hear. There is also a Mayan village there with Mayan people who explain the ancient ways of life.

Cozumel is a fun place to visit as well. It is a short ferry ride away. I was there a few years ago and loved shopping in San Miguel and snorkeling.

We did the exact same thing through salvatica and it was SO FUN!  The cenote was especially cool.  It was beautiful.  We saw a couple turtles getting out of the cenote when we got there.

We also booked a snorkeling trip.  Our resort had a travel agency attached and they booked it for us.  It was really fun.  The boat had a spinnaker on the back and we actually went spinnaker sailing (like hang gliding on the back of a boat).  And then when we were snorkeling they gave us food for the fish so we had all these fish around us, it was awesome!  Just remember if you go snorkeling to not touch the reef!

  • Usually the easiest and overall cheapest way to book excursions is through your resort b/c they help to set up the transportation.

We will be there the first week of November. I like bits of history incorporated with some activities.  I am interested in things like zip lining and other adrenaline type activities but FI is afraid of heights so that may be a no go.  I've always wanted to swim with dolphins but I kind of feel like it is not worth the money most places.

If I book directy through the resort, do I do that before we go or once we are there? Sorry for the naive questions, I've never planned a vacation like this before and I just want to get the best deals possible with the least amount of stress once we leave.
