Oh so this isn't even funny Photobooth problem

Whoa!!  I just spoke to a old friend in FL who is also getting married in May this year. We started talking about photo booths. Well turns out she paid her DJ a huge deposit to do a photo booth but when she mentioned it to her photographer they said NO way would they allow it! Unfortunately it is in her photographer's contract that says that they are to be the only photographer and since they hired the photographer first and the photo booth is only supposed to be a fun thing she didn't think it was a problem.  So check you contracts ladies before hiring a photobooth. WOW!

If anything, also check your contracts before hiring a photographer!

Some get really territorial like that.  And while I wanted our photographer to get great shots, I also didn't want him to be a jerk about it.

They gave her two reasons, one was that the quality of the photo booth photos was usually horrendous not coming from a photographer and people would confuse this with their company and also since they base their price of the photo package on getting reprints from orders from guests online they are taking that from them by cutting into that.

I hate stuff like that.  I mean I guess I can understand the photographer's logic (sorta), but seriously... lighten up.  No one expects a photobooth to have high-quality prints; they are supposed to be goofy, funny, campy.  And do they seriously think that photobooth pics would *really* cut into their reprint sales?  That's a shame for your friend.

Sometimes photographers can be a bit "dictatorial" when it comes to their work.  When the son of one of DH's coworkers was married, the coworker (the dad) was aiming to take a shot of the family.  The photographer turned to him and said, "No, *I* take the photos here."

FOG laughed and took his shot.

It's a good thing to think about though.  We talk all the time here on making sure that the photographer gets the right shots but it's also important that he doesn't rub you the wrong way.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for posting. I didn't even think of this!! We know we want a photobooth and are so close to booking our date, that was the first thing I was going to check. Now I need to find out from the photographers!

Starrbuk, I'm trying to imagine my own FIL saying, "Suck it."  The image is making me smirk at my desk.  :-)

Unfortunately guys, this is not a uncommon and the general rule with most good professional photographers. Many photographers had been providing photo backdrops at wedding receptions for many years, but then it sort of got "tacky" to have one or out of style so to say. They had them at Bar Mitzvahs only generally. Now DJ's and other services have been trying to cut in on it, some are even taking the photographers photos and charging couples huge money for slideshows etc I heard of a wedding where the DJ service set up a background and did family portraits like the photographer would have been doing and then put them online to sell them.  This is the photographers area. I don't think many photographers object to real photobooths that you step into and make funny faces, but I''m told these guys just do the same thing a photographer would provide, charge extra to the couple for it and take away from photos that would have ended up as part of the professional album. I know one reception hall in CT that the DJ takes bad unprofessional photos and puts them up on tha screen during the reception photographers nearly start crying because everyone at the reception thinks it is their work and then after the wedding the photographers are bombarded by requests for copies of those photos and people looking on line for them and they can't find them.  A good rule of thumb in this situation is to not hire a photobooth until you have hired your photographer and see if they provide that service also. Photographers usually charge less for them as an add-on, your photos will be better quality and there will less confusion.

Thanks for the info! I never in a million years would have thought a photographer would have an issue with this!
