Passports

Is anyone else freakin out about this federal govt shutdown??? I am! Because I have yet to sent out my passport renewal and our honeymoon is in Septemeber!!!!

Re: Passports

  • No, I just applied for mine a few days ago.  Normal processing times are still only 4 - 6 weeks, so even if the govnerment is shut down for a month, and the processing time doubles to 8-12 weeks, you should still have plenty of time before September.  Now if you were going in June or something, I'd probably freak out a little bit, but you should be fine.  It's also highly unlikely that they'll be shut down for a month, so I wouldn't stress....if you really want to though, when you do send it, you can always pay for the expedited fee.

  • If it happens at all, I doubt it will last long.  I'm sure you will get your passport in plenty of time... it is only April.  :)

  • I sent mine out last week and need it for July 5! Think it will come?
  • I sure hope yours will come in time, July.  I sent mine out about three weeks ago and need it for June 1st.  I thought I'd given myself a 5 or 6 week buffer, but this might get in the way.  :(  I've been doing lots of research... most of the shutdowns in the past last 3-7 days, although the one in 1995 lasted for 21 days.  Yikes!  Even if they take three weeks off, I think we should all be ok, but expediting it might be worth the cost...
  • I did when I heard about it yesterday as I am flying into the US on Monday for my shower.  I was afraid Immigration would be shut down.  Turns out they have to go to work even if they are not being paid.

If it continues, yes it's going to be an issue for me because I need to change my name on my passport before I renew my UK visa which is up in July.  I already have a VERY tight time line.

Last year when I renewed my passport I got it back in 3 days, without paying an extra fee, and that included sending it from London to the US and then back to London.
  • If the government were to shutdown, passports would be issued on an emergency basis only. If you already submitted your paperwork for a passport, then you should be fine. But the gov't isn't shutting down yet, so Im sure you're fine
  • My FI turned in his passport paperwork 2 -3 weeks ago and it arrived yesterday.  Which is a pretty quick turnaround.  Just keep checking the mailbox.  :)
