Going Outside Cruise Line for Airfare?

We just booked our European Cruise for our honeymoon because NCL was running a great deal.  With airfare from a less preferred but still doable airport in the area, we saved about $800 with this combo deal. Their airfare was a bit higher than other travel websites, but it included transfers to the dock.

However, when I called to switch the airfare days to add on a few days in Barcelona after the trip, they charged us change fees and a price difference, which brought the airfare up to about $2036 for the two of us. After looking online, we can fly through American, bank up some more miles (I have a few through work) and we would save $600!

The downfall is, we lose the protection of the cruise line getting us to the next destination if something happens to the flight and we lose the transfers.  But I feel for that price difference, it's almost worth it.  What do you think? I have 48 hrs to make the decision to accept the cruise flight or not and wanted some feedback.

Thanks in advance!
