Need tropical advice :(

I'm bummed out, since it turns out that our original destination (Belize) will be in hurricaine season. Don't ask me how I missed this when we were planning everything. Didn't book anything, at least!

Here's what we're looking for. Any ideas would be appreciated!
-Total budget: $2500 (not including airfare)
-Would love to stay for 10 days if possible
-Beaches, preferably on the beach
-Hiking/activity areas nearby (FI isn't much of a beach bum)
-Avoiding big resorts
-Something bed and breakfast-y or cottages or huts would be ideal
-Maybe a bit off the beaten path?

One of our relatives is generously covering our airfare, so we're mostly concerned with finding affordable places to stay once we're there. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this! I've read many of the other posts, and I can't believe how helpful many of the brides on here are.

Re: Need tropical advice :(

  • You should probably add in what time of year you're looking at. ;)
  • polichik....i'm planning a belize wedding.   what time of year were you planning and do you have any info you can share????  thanks.
  • If airfare is covered - I totally recommend Hawai'i. If you do Maui, you can stay overnight in the crater of Haleakala (hike in and hike out) and there are lots of great places away from the tourists. I don't know why more honeymooners don't hike and explore Hawai'i - I think it's fantastic for the adventurous off-the-beaten-track types.
  • I would  def price out all includsive places like Puntaaa (lol the knot wouldnt let me spell it right!!!)  Cana, DR or Mexico
  • I suggest Puerto Rico. You dont need a passport and it offers beaches as well as history/culture, nightlife, city, etc. Rent a car and travel the island from beach to a casino in a different city.

You can find a botique hotel in Olde San Juan ( El Convento Hotel - it used to be a convent back in the 1800's!)  Lowest price per night is less than $250/per night.

    Best wishes.

  • Wow, so I completely spaced on this post.. I'm sorry, ladies!

Good call, amoro. We'll be going September 6th and staying as long as we can afford.
  • Since you're worried about hurricanes, there are only 3 caribbean destinations that are totally "Safe" during hurricane season.  These 3 islands are aruba, bonaire, and curacao, none of which are all that amazing for hiking.  they are amazing for beach bums, however.  st. lucia and puerto rico are better for hiking but you would be risking hurricanes in september.

I would consider Hawaii,  Costa Rica, or fiji/tahiti/ borabora .  As for going to any of these places with $2500 budget, I honestly have no idea if that is possible.  The caribbean and mexico are easily do-able on that budget especially at an all-inclusive resort, but i just don't know if those are available in hawaii, costa rica, or french polynesia.
