Holiday Traditions!

I figured since its the holiday season ( and I'm kind of lacking my holiday spirit) we could all share our familiy's holiday traditions.

I figured it would also be helpful to pick up some cute traditions along the way, or to see if anybody has similar ones

Re: Holiday Traditions!

  • Every year without fail my mom buys my sister and I pjs to open and wear on Christmas eve and a new ornament for our tree.

We also get an orange at the bottom of our stocking, that was my nana's tradition. That started when fruit was harder to come by during the war, she looked forward to her orange every year.

I love the ornament one because now when I move out on my own  I have enough for a tree. Turns out Joe's family did the same for him.

I can't wait to do all of these traditions with my own family some day.

  • I receive some kind of ornament from someone every year. Some years I get more then one. So our tree is covered with ornaments. A few of them are ones that my family has given to fiance the past few years.

My mother has always done the orange in the stocking. I do this for ours too. It just wouldn't be Christmas without it. I didn't realise though that it was because of the war that this tradition started. It would make sense since I think my mother always got one in her stocking as a kid too.

Normally we spend Christmas eve with his family and Christmas morning with mine. It happened this way because I still have very young siblings so Santa still comes to my parents house. We also get together with my aunts family after or before Christmas to exchange and open gifts. Last Christmas we stayed in town and spent it with his uncles family.

  • In the past, we would get together on the first Friday evening of December and get out the tree and decorate it while having a pizza party and listening to Christmas music or having a Christmas movie (ELF!) on. That night our mother would give each of us (I have 2 siblings) an ornament, they have always been from a set so they're different but match at the same time. She still does this! We will be giving out ornaments at our wedding because this tradition means so much to me!

Our family traditions have morphed pretty radically since I was a kid, things are beginning to be lost, especially since my Dad can't handle noise any many people. We have been having very small get togethers instead of having all of the aunts/uncles/cousins and such on Christmas Eve and Day.

I'm hoping that next year FI & I will have a real tree, I've never had a real tree...so I think that would be special and fun to try out for at least one year!

  • Hi Girls,
My Holiday Traditions are NEW this year with my Fiance! We recently got our first house together (we were always in apts before), so we are decorating with lights, bought our Christmas tree, and hanging our ornaments. For Christmas day, we open our gifts from eachother first. Then later we will go to his parents and open gifts with them.

This is sorta silly but....we also dress up in holiday colors and take our Christmas Card pic in front of the tree...with our two dogs wearing matching outfits too! Does anyone else subject their pets to this type of humiliation?? lol

    Happy Holidays!

  • Oh I forgot our new tradition. Joe decided every December 11th we are going to put up our tree. He proposed on that day last year while we were decorating his tree at his parents house. He hung my ring box on the tree by a bow and when I saw it on the tree he got down on one knee. So now the ring box is going to be an ornament ( I need to make it a little prettier or write the date on it)

  • Thanks, Joe is pretty proud of himself for that one! I figured that would be a fun tradition for our family as the years go by as well.

  • Every christmas eve my whole family gathers at my moms house and every year one of the men are chosen to be Santa . I love to see the kids face light up when they see Santa appear chanting ho ho ho who's been good boys and girls this year and calls their name out to give them a present. We have a big dinner and lots of dancing. I can't wait
  • We always do the lighting of the menorah to celebrate the Jewish heritage on my mothers side.

My baby ornaments always go on the xmas tree.

We started doing stockings again a couple years ago.

Aside from that the only thing we always do is go to the German Christmas market in Chicago. It's always a lot of fun to walk around and see everything they have.

  • Every Chritmas Eve at my parents house we open up 1 present each (mainly because me and my siblings could never wait for christmas). On Christmas eve we write Santa a letter explaing what we would like for Christmas, then bake him some yummy cookies and leave them by the fireplace with milk and some carrots for the reindeer. Then we sleep over at my parents house. But for the past couple of years since Ive been with my FI, he has dressed up as Santa Claus for my youngest sister (shes 8) and would be poking around the tree putting christmas presents underneath. I would go get her and we do an army crawl through the hallway and living room trying to stealth and sneak up on Santa. But somehow he always manages to get away lol. Then Christmas day we watch The Christmas Story ALL DAY! We watch it once Christmas Eve then all day long Christmas day.
  • Normally the day after thanksgiving I would put up our chirstmas tree and put all the lights and the cranberries and popcorn on the tree, then as a family we would all put the ornimanets on the tree, we each have our " own" orniments, (ones that were given specifically to us over the years). I typically wrap all my dad's christmas presents to my mom every year because he doesnt wrap that well, For christmas eve We use to go to my mom's parents house and open presents and stockings. Then chirstmas day we open presents and stockings at home..normally super early...then we have a bruch and invite my grandparents over..and then we go to whichever aunt and uncle house who is hosting chirstmas. Us kids do a white elefant gift exchange and then play games for the rest of the night. For chirstmas eve now we do chirstmas with FI family, just his parents and hist brother's family, we each get a stocking fully of presents and eat. LAst  year we had to leave early so we could drive home to MI for chirstmas, im happy to say this year we will be flying..and it will only take us 2 hours instead od 12! =)

I normally get an orange in the toe of my christmas stocking as well, but I think my mom did it when the family budget was tight  and she didnt have much to put in there, but she has been doing it ever since!

  • We always have sicilian pizza on Christmas eve! :) Italian/Sicilian tradition is to have the feast of the 7 fishes on Christmas eve, but when my mom was little none of the kids liked fish so they got pizza instead! When my siblings and I were little we didn't like fish either so we had Sicilian pizza. I plan to continue this. FI and I are probably going to be on our own for Christmas eve... maybe with his parents? So I'm going to convince them to get pizza :P

  • We drive around and look at lights, I've gotten FI into this too.

We always do stockings and stuff them with the coolest stuff we can think of.

FI and I are going to buy 1 ornament every year starting with next year (I want one that says "our 1st Christmas")

I make a Chex Mix recipe that my Great-Grandmother took off the Chex box, the real original recipe!  My family always fills stockings up with anything that will fit, so sometimes the best gifts are those in the stockings!

For New Years Day, we eat pork & sauerkraut...good 'ol PA Dutch!

On my Mom's side of the family, we do a Pollyanna.  We all draw names on Thanksgiving, and the gifts are given Christmas Eve.

  • These are so cute! Just what I needed before heading into work!

We always open presents on Christmas Eve. No big dinner or anything. This year I'm thinking it will only be FI, me, and my mom and dad. Christmas day is when everyone comes over now, so we'll do our present swap with them and eat. Then we'll do the same at FI's house.

  • we don't really have any traditions; the ones that I had when I was a kid changed after I moved to Vermont and my Opa died; we used to go to my Mimi and Opa's house on Christmas Eve, but now Mim goes over to my parents house on Christmas Eve and stays till the day after Christmas because she doesn't drive after it turns dark (she has issues seeing at night, so stays somewhere if she knows whatever she is doing ends after the sun goes down).

I guess you could say a tradition my family does is that they go over board on the present thing.  I could describe, but it's easier if I show.

The "Sanata Bags" (because the amount of stuff put in the stocking is a little out of hand):

The tree (this tree was from 2007, it's a 4' tree sitting on a table; the gifts are for 4 people):

Vhati's family doesn't have any traditions at all; aside from Vhati going with his Mom to Christmas Eve mass.  He's told her already that this is the last year he's going.  Generally; Christmas takes a back seat to his Mom's boyfriend's birthday; we get about 2 hours of holiday (if that) and 8 hours of birthday party at an aweful resturante (gotten sick every time I've been there).
