October 2011 Weddings

What are you using for flowers?

So my fiance and I are thinking about buying a town home.  It's something that we have floated around a bit.  Right now we have more than enough money saved up for our wedding, but it's about the same amount of money we would need for a down payment.  We have 5 months, and I have already increased my savings to try to make this work for us.  So we are looking at these we can buy now out of our disposeable income, also looking at places we can save on the wedding.

So in my mind is the flowers.  We have 8 yes I said 8 bridesmaids, I know we do not have to do flowers but I want to do flowers, I would possably consider doing fake flowers if the cost saves us a lot.  My envision was 5 orange gerbera daisies each.  I thought i could bring that down to 3 each and save money there, I'm not sure if gerbera daisies are in season in the fall or not.

Thus I am just courious on what others are using for flowers.

  • If you decide to go with fake gerberas, they are "in season" at the crafts stores now. I've just started seeing them.  I'd call and ask a local florist if they are in season in October and how much you'd have to pay per stem.
  • I'm using orchids and calla lilies for the centerpieces. I really wanted peonies for my bouquet, but at $15-25/stem, I might have to reconsider - might use roses or tulips instead. BM bouquets will probably be callas as well

  • Gerberas are in season in the fall, and a reasonably priced flower. :)

I'm having gerberas, roses, and calla lilies in my bouquet. All of which are in season in the fall. My florist told me the flower that brings my price up is the calla lilies. But my bouquet was still middle of the line, price- wise, and my girls are low end (they'll have the same kinds of flowers).

Fake flowers would probably help cut costs, but how much would all depend on how cheap you could find fake flowers that you liked.

  • Im using fake hydrangea's and actually doing kissing/pomander balls instead of boquets- 5 bridesmaids- total cost 30.00, I dont even know what price range is for real boquets though...:-/

  • My bridesmaid bouquets are $40. They include hydrangeas, and 2 different colored roses. Half of our centerpieces will be $45; orchids submerged in water in 3 tiered vases. We'll use rose pomanders for the remainder of the centerpices and they will also be used for the ceremony.

We were quoted $160 for a 134 count real rose pomander by one florist and $75 for silk rose pomanders with decor by another florist.

I originally was not sold on the silk flowers but they look great, and I don't care too much about flowers. Here's a pic of what the silk arrangements will look like

  • I'm using Gerber daisies. I went to a local florist and got priced $330 for 7 bouquets, 9 bouts. and 5 corsages.
  • that's great news that gerbera daisies are in- season!   Thank you to those who have posted prices for their bouquets it realy helps me determine what i want.

I had orriginally thought i would do fake flowers (because the you have them forever) but then people start telling me don't use fake flowers it's so tacky.  I do need to learn to just brush those comments asside.

Thank you to everyone for your responses.  It's nice learning about what others are doing.

  • I'm stuck on flowers too...so expensive:( The only thing I knew for sure was that I wanted bright yellow calla lillies for my bouquet, mught do something less expensive and smaller for BM. I only have 3 tho- can't imagine buying 8 more bouquets ah! A while ago I was toying with the idea of having them each carry a single white rose or white calla lily, but then we decided to go with fuller bouquets. If you know you def want gerber daisies (btw I LOVE When they're all in different color schemes, so cool!) maybe you could have each girl carry a single gerber daisy in a different accent color? very chic in my opinion.

I know i'm crazy for having 8 bridesmaids but I'm one of those brides who has to have even sides, and I really really wanted my brothers in my wedding so my Fiance had 5 guys he wanted I have 2 brothers and then my godchildren (A girl and a boy!) are juniors.  I'm thinking of having 3 daisies per bridesmaid, I have thiought have doing more than just orange so I may take your idea of the different accent color to an extent.

I'm at least not doing centerpeices so that will save money there.  I'll only have one centerpiece which will be the in memory of centerpiece.

I thank you for your imput!  I am very happy with the comments everyone has made very helpful.
