October 2011 Weddings

Anyone else tired of planning?

It seems like everything is going wrong right now. One of my bridesmaids and my maid of honor are suddenly "worried about money" as far as getting to the wedding and buying the dress. I mean, I'm worried about money too. My fiance and I are barely making more than minimum wage. But they've known about the wedding since I got engaged last July. It's not like I sprung this on them at the last minute.

We can't get our priest to return our phone calls. I called him yesterday and FI called him the day before and he hasn't returned either of our calls. We had this problem a few weeks ago too. Twice FI called first and didn't get a response. I called the next day and he called later and left a voicemail. Two weeks in a row.

Also, I got two of the $10 for $50 worth of Vistaprint stuff back in February. They expire tonight and I can't order anything with them. I was going to use one for stuff for my bridesmaids and one for invitations but now I'm not sure if my bridesmaids are going to be there and I'm not sure if we're getting married at the church.

I'm on the verge of just going to the courthouse. That's not really what I want to do, I'm just tired of everything going wrong.

Re: Anyone else tired of planning?

  • Don't give up!  I felt the same way too but thing eventually came together.  You can have a wedding without bridesmaids and find another priest!  Vista print always has deals so don't worry about missing one or 2!  When is your wedding?
  • I think you should take a breather...many of us have had frustrating things happen so far. I was worried about an officiant too and there were 2 that were already booked when we asked and I started freaking out. I finally found one that was available and got high reviews on a site I was researching at.

As for your BMs, are you asking them to get specific dresses or can they just purchase a dress in the colors that you like? That may be a cheaper way to go and that is what I asked my BMs to do - just to get a black cocktail dress that they could wear again. Some of them got good deals and they were on sale - some had a dress already from another wedding. In our last wedding we went to, the bride made us buy these outrageously priced red BM dresses that we can never wear again. Plus we had travel costs to boot and there were several of us that could barely afford to go. I just don't think she considered our finances at all so I made sure I did NOT do that to them.

So I def think you have options and can smooth out these probs before wedding time.
  • Kalithia: my wedding is October 8. At least, I hope it is.

The issue with the officiant is that he can't officially say we can be married at the church until we have finished premarital counseling. We've had one session. We were supposed to have another one this week but he didn't return our calls so I guess that's not happening. It's not just a random officiant either. He was the priest at the church I grew up in before he moved to this church across town. The church he's with now is the one that my parents attended when they first moved to my hometown. So there are a lot of sentimental reasons attached to that particular priest and that particular church.

Olywillis: I had picked a certain color from J Crew and told them they could get whichever dress they wanted in that color. Then J Crew discontinued that color. This was a few days ago. I haven't even picked a new color yet (or store...I've decided not to go with J Crew) and they're already saying they can't afford it.

  • J. Crew is expenive!  I didn't even know they sold dressy dresses.  For my bridesmaid dresses I am using Alfred Angelo.  I choose the same color but different dresses for my bridesmaids.  All the dresses are under $150 and they look hot!  Thry there.  They have a lot of colors to choose from.  I understand about the priest.  We are going through premarital counseling too but we are using an outside source to which my healt insurance is helping pay for.  Just stay on your priest.  Call him everyday of you have to.  My wedding is October 1st in Durham, NC.  It will all work out.  If you are doing a lot of the stuff yourself then you have plenty of time.  About 2 weeks ago I was in a panic because I had no venue but I eventually found one that was perfect and wasn't booked!
    All the best to you.
  • Durham....you should show up at your premarital appointment even if you haven't heard back. If he doesn't show up to that, is there someone else at the church that you could contact? Can you talk with him after service and let him know about your concerns?

As for BM dresses, I would highly recommend David's Bridal. I selected my color and my bridesmaids have over 40 dresses (long only) to pick from. My MOH got her dress for $100 and another BM spent $99. There are so many choices and I am sure you can find a color that you will love. Their selection also works with all body types so its easier to find a dress that you feel comfortable in.

Don't worry...it will all workout. I would talk to each BM just to thank them again and to ask their thoughts on dresses/shoes. This gesture will show that you do care and that it is important for you that they are there to share your day.

    Best of luck!
PS...my wedding is also October 8th!!

  • We didn't have an appointment set. We were supposed to call this week to set up an appointment. FI gets his schedule one week at a time so the priest was the one to suggest just setting up our premarital counseling at the beginning of the week. I understood why he couldn't do it the week before Easter and he had told us ahead of time. But we called this week like we were supposed to and he doesn't answer? That I don't understand.

I had picked J Crew originally because that's what they wanted. They thought the dresses would be something they could wear again. But...whatever. I've never even bought anything from J Crew so I was just going on what they said. That's why it annoys me so much. I don't care if they have dresses from there. I just want them to be from the same place in the same color.

  • I looked at some at J Crew before too now that they have their wedding section - just depends - some were pricey and some were reasonable. The Limited also has a wedding section now and they are reasonable too. Click

Yeah, David's Bridal is also an option or else a discount bridal outlet would be a good option too. Sometimes there are dresses for only $30 at the outlet! I preferred to let them pick a non-satiny, non BM-ish dress so it is not just a one day dress. Most at David's are very BM-ish. Now if they still complain after all these options...well, maybe they just don't want to be in the wedding then...that's pretty crappy if so!
