I'm torn between 2 places...honeymoon poll

I'm torn on where to go on our honeymoon.....both Costa Rica and the Mayan Rivierra look nice....the only downfall to Costa Rica is that it seems like you spend a lot of time travelling on your honeymoon and really need at least 2 wks to get the full feel of it....the Rivierra looks very nice and relaxing, but does it offer enough activities to do too?

  • Costa Rica isn't that much further away than the Mayan Riviera in Mexico. We honeymooned in Fiji which was a 10 hour flight from LA, and we're from the east coast so we had to get to the west coast. We flew into Vegas and spent a few days there, then rented a car and drove to LA to fly to Fiji. Yes, it was a lot of traveling, but it was definitely worth it. A lot of people go all over the world for their HM, much farther away than Costa Rica and don't feel the need to take 2 entire weeks to get the full affect.

Are you looking at staying at a resort in Costa Rica or resort hopping and doing a lot of activity filled excursions? I wasn't sure if you meant a lot more traveling time by the actual traveling to get there or while you're there. Either way, that shouldn't be the determining factor between CR or Mexico. Pick your HM based on the destination, resort, and activites while you're there. HTH!
  • We're getting married in Costa Rica and the travel really isn't that bad.  You can fly direct to the major airports from Houston or Miami. Depending on where you want to go there's a bit of ground travel by car but there is so much to stop and see and do that it makes it an adventure and it's not going to be boring.

  • what kinds of activities are you looking for? i've been to both (cr once and RM 7 times).

  • If you are worried about finding enough activities in The Riviera Maya region of Mexico I don't think you will have a problem. We spent a week down there and still didn't have enough time to do all the activities and adventures that we wanted to. It was amazing and beautiful and there are so many things to do and it is very reasonably priced as well. The culture in that area and the history is amazing as well.

  • I think I missed how much time you have.

I'd say Costa Rica.  I don't think you REALLY need two weeks there.  Sure, it would be nice to have, but you don't need it.  Of course, I'm someone who has gone to Taiwan and Japan for 5 days, so I'm not stranger to very long flights for short trips.
  • i don't think you can go wrong with either we are going to the riviera maya and our travel agent showed us tons of stuff we can do. it looks like a blast! visti ruins, snorkel, zip line, hike, horesback, scuba, fishing, dancing..... lots of stuff!

You will most likely not be disappointed by either place. BUT since it is your HM, maybe pick the place you dont see yourself going back too... esp if you have 2 weeks! OR both?? Another thing to consider is the weather of the time of the year you will be going.

My fiance and I have chosen Costa Rica.. and we cant wait! Looks like there is tons to do!!!

    Good luck with yours!!

I've never been to Costa Rica, but we've been to Riveria Maya two times.
There is tons to do there. Depending on what resort you stay at -there is usually plenty to do right at the resort itself. Between the shows, beach, parties, shops, etc....
You can take a short taxi ride to the "strip" in Playa Del Carmen. There are a TON of really good restaurants there, and tons of little shops. We went there at least 2 to 3 times during our vacations. There is also a short ferry ride you can take to Cozumel. Where there are more shops, restaurants, etc (plus the water there is amazing, if you are into snorkeling).
You can also do some of the tours that they offer.. we went on an ATV ride on the beach and through the jungle. We went into the cenotes.. and we also went to the Tulum ruins (which was amazing).
We spent 7 nights there last time, and there was plenty to do. I would definitely vote for Rivieria Maya! I would go there every year if I could :)
  • Both places sound amazing. I have never been to Costa Rica but my fiance's roomate is from there and just got back with his girlfriend and they both loved it. I have been to Riviera Maya and i found that there were a ton of activities to do. If your concern is that Riviera Maya will be boring don't worry. That is not the case at all. I think you definitely have the option of relaxing or being adventuresome there. In regards to Costa Rica, I'm sorry I don't know much but from what I hear I agree that you may be moving around a bit more.
