DIY Flowers: real & silk - any thoughts?

I am tentatively planning on making my floral arrangements for my wedding, in March 2010. I found a potential website to buy the flowers from (www.fiftyflowers.com), and am planning on doing a fairly simple, hand tied bridal bouquet & bridesmaid bouquets, and maybe some simple, low-lying centerpieces (thinking about mainly candles for the centerpieces). I will probably also try to do the boutonniere's, unless i just purchase those. I just wanted to know about who else has taken this task on for their wedding? Any recommendations, thoughts, words of advice? I know one item to consider is that I will have to order the flowers to be delivered about 2 days before the wedding, which could pose one of its own issues, since I would be putting them together myself. I like to be creative anyway, so I thought this might be a cool way to express my creativity while saving some money. Also, what are people's thoughts regarding the use of silk flowers? I never thought I would consider using them, but after being MOH for my best friend and seeing her use silk flowers, I am starting to consider that option as well. Is this considered tacky, or is it okay now? Thanks in advance! :-D

I bought silk from afloral.com and it cost me about $100. In that order I also got floral tape(my best friend I don't what i would have done without it)pearl pins.  I propably got over 75 flowers and I just started putting them together this weekend and I am done with all the bouquets!!! it wasn't hard at all.  It took me 5 hours and I did it all by myself.  I saved like 400 dollars by doing my own flowers, and since they are silk I can keep them forever!!! you can see my flowers in my DIY section of my BIO in my siggy!!!! good luck.

I'm using a variation of silk flowers; they're called Real Touch or Natural Touch flowers and look much more realistic than silk. A friend of mine used them in her wedding and they looked awesome. I'm getting them from www.save-on-crafts.com. That being said, I'm only using flowers for the bouquets and boutonnieres; my centerpieces are non-floral...mostly candles. =)
