i kinda had a hard time too.  I remember one day my sister and I tried on more bridesmaid dresses than you could imagine.  I wouldn't worry about them all not being there.  Take someone local and pick something you like and let the OOT girls know.  Try to be considerate about their shapes and sizes but you will drive yourself nuts if you take a ton of people with you and get too many opinions.

have you considered styles where they can add shawls or little jackets or something if they are uncomfortable?  Just a though.  Or, you could potentially let them pick their dress, just give them a designer and color so they match, and maybe a length.

Don't try and please everyone. Most will have a problem with whatever you pick. I changed my mind 3 times before we finally settled on a dress because I got so many negative comments from my girls. My biggest problem is that I have girls that have big boobs and are really modest. Especially for one of my girls it was like if any cleavage showed it was a problem. We finally picked a dress that David's bridal had that covered the chest completely. Very figure flattering. It is a short dress though. I can send you a link if you want. Also be aware if you try to be nice and let them pick their own dress in the same color but different styles the fabric of the dresses tend to be different and look weird together.

We had a similar situation (2 BMs live locally and the 3rd lives in AZ) and one of the bridesmaids is plus-sized while the other 2 take a size 8 and 4 so I thought bridesmaid dresses would be difficult. What we did was take the 2 local girls shopping and it was surprisingly easy, there were several dresses that looked great on both of them... Check out my bio under 'wedding party" to see the dress we ultimately chose. Also, I'd recommend choosing a chain store like David's Bridal or a brand like Alfred Angelo that is widely available, so the bridesmaids that aren't local can try on the dresses at a store near them.

Wow! I feel guilty for having such an easy time with this...I found these beautiful Maxi dresses on sale at JCPENNEY...(I can't beleive it either) and I called up my girls and one of them went to her store in Orlando and tried it on and loved it, and after the rest of them tried it they loved it as well. It is an empire waist that looks good on every shape. The sizes range from 4 up to a 16...I am so sorry you are having so many problems. I would suggest just letting go of some control and letting them pick what they are comfortable in. Everything will work out! GL!

Bridesmaid dresses was hands down the hardest thing for me. It did not help that two of my bridesmaids were here, two were out of town and they are all SO different. I would suggest going to look with someone who is NOT in your bridal party and getting an idea of what style you want. Once you have a few dresses picked out, you can go back with your girls.
