safety concerns in Montego Bay Jamacia

Hey ladies! I am usually on the June board, but thought I would come here to ask a question. Any tips/suggestions for safety in Jamacia? I have read some stuff online and we plan on asking our TA as well, but just was wondering if anyone had first hand advice to give me. TIA!

Re: safety concerns in Montego Bay Jamacia

  • I see a lot of people saying that they felt unsafe in Jamaica, but honestly we didn't at all.  Just don't be stupid and always be aware of your surroundings - just the same as you would here in the states.  Don't be wandering around in a drunken stupor after dark, don't be flashing tons of money around, etc. and you'll be fine.  We found the Jamaican locals to be some of the friendliest and most relaxed of all the places we've visited.  We went out of the resort quite frequently for excursions, meals, shopping, etc. and never felt threatened.

  • My FI and I just got back from going to Jamaica with his family. The only advice that I have is to use common sense. If you go off of a resort be polite, keep your money in your pocket, and just go about your business. Locals trying to sell things will not bother you if you tell them 'no thanks.' I would have to agree that Jamaican locals are the friendliest people that I have ever met, and they're fun to talk to!

  • I thought it wasn't that safe (I was constantly being hit on while walking around fiance) and they were very annoying and rude...always trying to sell you crap and getting mad at you when you don't want to buy anything...I've been to about 7 island so far and Montego Bay was by far my least favorite for the above reasons...

  • I am getting married in Jamaica, we're leaving May 11th. I don't think we will be leaving the resort unless its with a tour guide. I've been on previous vacations and the best is to use common sense like previously said! :)
