So how did the interview go? Besides the rough part! Does it seem promising! My fingers are crossed for you!

hey thanks for the sweet wishes!!! the rough part is CONTINUING! i am on to the next stage of the process and they want me to do another project which involves hiring a graphic artist and doing a mini collection for them. doing a project is a standard thing for fashion companies right now since there's way more competition out there and lots of talented people have flooded the market this year. i also have to make a store visit out to NJ with one of their VPs some time this week. at this point i don't even know if i want the job b/c i have heard some bad things about them... but thanks so much for thinking of me! i haven't worked since july and it's really hard out there for a pimp ;-P

Wow, that is quite a daunting interview process!  I can't believe you have to make mock collections at most places you're interviewing.  I figured most places would just look at portfolios...wow.  That really is tough and I wish you luck!  And thanks for getting Three 6 Mafia stuck in my head!

yeah hynes, it's nutso these days. a couple yrs ago it was never nearly so bad. so far i have done one for CKJeans and another one for a kids company (both companies took 2 wks after i presented the projects to get back to me with a "no" after i persistently emailed and phoned them for an answer). so in this business there is 1) a lot of PITA BS and 2) a lot of rudeness. thankfully the ecko red people are giving me some money to do this 2nd round project (which is all going towards the graphic artist i will be hiring to help me).

Holy crap, I didn't realize YOU have to hire the graphic artist yourself!  That really is crazy.  I guess the fashion business really is pretty competitive.  I had no idea! Now you have peaked my curiosity and I wonder if you could show me a link to anything you've designed?  I have ZERO creative ability and I'm always impressed with people that do.  It's fine if you don't want to, I was just curious!

yeah the business is so hard. i would love to get out but at this point in my life it's probably too late. :-( certainly, i don't mind showing you some of my work LOL! i have two online portfolios - but this is the best of the two: http://www.coroflot.com/public/individual_details.asp?individual_id=165936& if you want to see actual examples, i am tracking a few auctions on ebay of some stuff i designed a couple yrs ago. i like to check ebay from time to time b/c i love to collect stuff i designed and keep it for future baby shower gifts and also for my own little girl (i bet you i will end up having a boy though!!! lol!). it really surprises me to see stuff on there that i designed 6 yrs ago! i designed these 3 dresses working at ralph lauren (i actually had an interview there this morning, funny coincidence): http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180419747216&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT and http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360134779585&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT and http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360159841640&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT i also designed these two when i was at bonnie jean/bonnie baby (i really hated this job, lots of cheap product poorly made, putting babies in polyester, yuck!!): http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390102261772&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT and http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Bonnie-Jean-Baby-Girl-Christmas-Dress-Polka-Dot-18M_W0QQitemZ280412436205QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4149e236ed and i designed this when i was at gap: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250378021287&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT and they're still selling some of the LLCoolJ stuff i designed at sears (the denim i had to work with was so gross!!). Sweet!  I'll take a look when I get home from work!  I love the idea of getting stuff on ebay to keep as mementos or give away.

Oooh, I love LOVE the little Ralph Lauren dresses and your sketches!  I want a little girl to dress up with such cute clothes!  Some very cute tops and coats/sweaters in the Missy's sections too.  You've got some great talent!  Thanks for sharing :)

aw thanks! i appreciate that. yeah i look at the little dresses i have collected in my stash over the years and love how tiny they are. everything looks cute when it's only 8 inches tall- lol! i actually intvw'd at ralph this morning and it's for a sort of "non job"- it was more of an exploratory interview and it would be for kids. she told me i was over-qualified and i was like "no i'm not! please take me back!!" lol

Ugh, I hate the dreaded "you're over-qualified for this job."  Obviously you still need the job or else you wouldn't be there!

I love the polka dot dress!! Adorable! :)Out of curiosity, when you make a project for an interview, do you actually have to MAKE the clothes or do you just provide sketches?

you just have to do the sketches. depending on the company, sometimes it's black and white garment sketches (very technical looking)- sometimes it's colored up sketches showing multiple colorways of one style laid out on something called a line sheet. other times they want a mix of fashion illustrations to show mood along with flat garment sketches. i tend to do the last option b/c a fashion illustration is a way to show your point of view and artistic thumbprint so to speak. a lot of designers don't sew so thank god that's not required! o/wise i would be in LOADS of trouble!

Oh ok! I was just wondering because I was imagining designing & then actually making several outfits or pieces - and that seems like a lot of work for an interview! :)
