Who's using a lighting specialist?

I'm just curious if any of you are using / hiring a lighting specialist for your ceremony or reception locations. We are a bit up in the air.

On the one hand, our location does have dimmers that they say we can have adjusted throughout the night to set the mood for dinner vs. dancing. But, it's still just plain white lights in a fairly plain room to begin with, and there would be nothing setting the dance floor apart.

So we looked at a lighting guy who has worked at our reception site a lot, and he had some good ideas to use uplighting on the side walls to give it some color, cafe lights strung over the dance floor, and pinspotting to highlight each centerpiece / dinner table. I think it'll be really nice, but it's not cheap.

Cafe Lights example (not at our venue, and we would have them more dense)

Uplighting (not our venue either, but we have similar brick walls)

In the end, we'll have to decide based on our budget, but I just was curious if you girls are doing uplighting or other specialty lighting.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Who's using a lighting specialist? : I was talking with our lighting guy and he said to be careful with blue and purple lighting because it may make people look kind of weird in pictures - almost sick, even? Because it tends to become almost greenish on your skin. He said that amber and pink are the most flattering lighting color options. Now, I am in no way telling you what to do -- just letting you know something that I didn't even think about when I was talking to my guy about colors! I'm sure it will look great, whatever you decide to do. And he wouldn't offer blue (and people wouldn't use blue!) if it looked bad in pictures. Anyway, take that with a grain of salt. :)

I didn't even think about this! I will for sure talk to our lighting guy about it. Our colors are jade, emerald, and eggplant though and I want the lights to go with our theme... Hmm ill have to think about this.

    Thank you!

  • I have up lighting that comes with the venue and our DJ may do a monogram on the dance floor.  I really wanted the stars on the ceiling look, but I'm not sure I want to spend all the additional money on extra lighting since in July it won't get dark outside until almost 9:30.  (We have huge windows all around the room.) Then it's only about an hour that the additional lighting will even be visible.

    I'm torn.
