Honeymoon in India?

Has anyone gone on their honeymoon in India? FI and I are thinking about it, but we're still in the information-gathering stages. I'd appreciate your input!

Re: Honeymoon in India?

  • FI and I have been to India together before, and we are considering going back for part of our honeymoon this summer.  What kind of information are you looking for?  What part of the country are you thinking of visiting?

  • Well, first of all, I'm wondering whether we should book a package with an agency. We're going in the winter, so I'd like to take advantage of the warmer weather and hit up the beaches in the south. But we'd like to make this a two-week vacation, so I think we'd like to travel around a bit if possible. It's a HUGE country, so we kind of have to pick and choose what we'd want to see/do.
  • I haven't been to the southern part of the country either, but we're thinking of Goa for our honeymoon.  We're planning to go for two weeks too, and for now we want to spend the first week in the mountains of Nepal and the second week somewhere warm, either Goa or maybe the Seychelles or Maldives.

I think it might be worth your while to book a package with a travel agency for this trip, especially if you've never been to India before.  I almost never recommend travel agents, and we didn't use one for our first trip there, but a honeymoon is different and supposed to be stress free, right?  We traveled on a small budget last time we were in India, and we were there in the central and Eastern part of the country for about three weeks.  We've traveled a lot all over the world, and India was still the most noticeably different/exotic/startlingly poor country I have ever been to.  We had a lot of amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, but we also traveled overnight on public trains (think cockroaches) and I managed to get dysentery in Varanasi, experiences I'm thinking you won't want to have during a romantic trip :)

It seems like maybe a week in one place (Delhi maybe, as a jumping off point for Agra/Jaipur/Rajasthan?) and then a week in the warmer south might give you a good variety of things to do.

  • I desperately want to visit the Andamans... I have nothing else to contribute to this conversation though!

dc*prep, India makes for an excellent honeymoon. Have you thought about doing a guided tour? Check out our website, Gate 1 Travel, for information about our great tours. http://www.gate1travel.com/india-travel/default.aspx

  • No help, but FI also really, really wants to go to Goa! (Mostly for the food - I'm vegetarian. And because neither of us have ever been to India.)

  • msmerymac, I'm also vegetarian, and the awesome food was definitely one of the high points of visiting the country, in my opinion!  FI isn't normally vegetarian, but he didn't eat meat the whole time we were there either.
