San Francisco hotel recommendations

My fiance and I are thinking of going to San Francisco for a week for our honeymoon.  We're hoping to do a day trip to Napa and maybe spend a night or two camping at Yosemite.... the only problem we're having is finding promising hotels.  It seems like there are a lot of boutique hotels and fewer reputable chains in the downtown area.  We'd love any recommendations and any information we can get :)

Re: San Francisco hotel recommendations

  • Off the top of my head, the Westin St. Francis is a very elegant hotel right on Union Square, the W is in SOMA and the Ritz is near Union Square. There are multiple Hiltons, Hyatts and Marriotts, and all of them have locations near Union Square.

There are plenty of chain hotels, so if you have a favorite I'd suggest looking it up to see where exactly they have SF locations.
  • I stayed at a great little boutique hotel right in the middle of downtown: Hotel Union Square

All 1930s style, right on the cable car line, very trendy.
  • If you can afford it, the W hotel is also right downtown.
  • As a heads up, I believe the camping at Yosemite is terribly difficult to book. I may be wrong, as I haven't been in years, but when I was in my teens we stayed in the tent cabins and I remember it was really tough to get in for.  A friend of the family somehow helped my parents out.  So you may want to check that out (?)
  • i've stayed at hotel adagio ad hotel vitale, both very nice with good locations and excellent service. they're owned by the same company.

  • we did San Fran, Yosemite, and Carmel this past April.  In fact, we got engaged in Yosemite!  We didn't stay in high dollar, fancy smancy hotels (but it wasn't our honeymoon either) but they were very  nice.

In San Fran we stayed 4 nights at The Shearaton at Fishermans Wharf.  It was in the sort of tourist area (which we didn't hang out there much) but was convenient to the cable cars. In Yosemite we stay 3 night at The Houndstooth Inn, a bed and breakfast in Oakhurst, CA. It was about 10mins. from Yosemite.  We would spend all day in the park and then drive back.

Both places were moderately priced but very nice.
