Am I crazy for planning an outdoor wedding on Lake Norman in March?

We have selected the perfect location but are concerned about the cold and rain.  This will be our 10 year wedding renewal and I want it to be perfect.  However, we both LOVE the water and the outdoors and want to stay true to our marriage date.  What should I do?

Re: Am I crazy for planning an outdoor wedding on Lake Norman in March?

  • I don't even know what state that is. Try your local board. (look on the left, pulldown under LOCAL)
  • I don't know where Lake Norman is...  but, check your farmers almanac... if you live there, you should know the weather patterns.  If you have to ask if you are crazy, chances are, it's probably a bad idea.
  • I have no idea where that is, but if it is asking your guests to be uncomfortable in the climate, yeah, it's a bad idea.  What do you mean by being true to your marriage date?
  • March is probably pushing it in MOST states in the US, except maybe Florida.    However, we got married in early April in VA, and it was perfect.

Look at average daytime tems in that area over the last few years.  If it's likely to be colder than about 65, or warmer than 85, you should reconsider.  There are a few things you can do to help increase your guests' comfort down to about 55 and up to 90 (blankets, space heaaters, hot drinks, or fans, misters, cool drinks, shade).

And like ANY outdoor event, you will want an indoor backup in case of rain, high winds, or any other kind of inclement weather (including extreme temperatures).

  • I doubt it will be bad at Lake Norman during that time. You may need a back up plan for the rain but I would imagine it would be low 70's then. Definitely double check almanac, but I believe even this year it was in the upper 70's around that time.

  • You may have to get some of those outdoor heaters to keep everyone warm at least for a "just in case" moment!

If you dont mind me asking which location will this be at? Im planning a 2nd wedding and live in Winston-Salem. I was thinking of the lake but dont know where to start!

    Congratulations on your 10 yrs!
  • We have a place at LKN.  I would just be prepared for cold and rain.  It can still get pretty cold in March!

  • I know there was one March -- maybe 2003? -- in which it rained practically every day in North Carolina. (I feel like we're having an October like that now!). March is definitely iffy -- even if it's not raining, it could be 45 degrees. Stick with your day, but you might have a back-up plan if you deem the outdoor site too uncomfortable....

(PPs, Lake Norman is near Charlotte, NC.)
  • We were thinking of an outdoor wedding in the Charlotte area in March, until we saw outdoor temp average for March is 61F. We are now planning May.
  • The average high for March is 63. That's for the  entire month of March. If you select a date earlier in the month, of course it's going to be colder.
