Belize Anyone?

FI and I are considering the Belize Cayes for our honeymoon. Anyone ever been there that can reccomend good places they've stayed. Or bad ones.

I've checked out tripadvisor, but I want some more opinions =)

Re: Belize Anyone?

  • We stayed at Hamanasi in Hopkins. It was AMAZING. From start to finish.

  • From a lot of the pictures i've looked at it seems like the beaches aren't very sandy. More rocky/reef. Is that true? I love everything about Belize, but if the beaches aren't good for swimming I'm not too sure I want to go.
  • We visited Belize, and this was our basic itinerary: we flew into and out of Belize City.  We started our trip in San Pedro in Ambergris Caye (got there via ferry from Belize City).  We rented a beach house there, and went into town every evening for the nightlife.  From there, we took a boat tour for like three night and four days where we slept either on the boat or on tiny private islands every night.  We ended the trip with a few days in Placencia, farther south.  Then we took a little puddle-jumper (eep!) back to Belize City and flew home directly.

We rented a house in San Pedro with a group of friends, so it wasn't really honeymoon-appropriate!  In Placencia, the Turtle Inn is awesome.

  • Belize is an amazing country, and I think it would make a great honeymoon spot.  The beaches where I was (San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker) were not places were you could swim right off the beach.  However, there was a pier at my hotel, and you could swim off the end of the pier.  The best swimming, of course, is at the reefs.  We weren't on the beach much because we spent every day on some kind of boat tour, snorkeling with sharks, looking at manatees, and having picnics on deserted islands.

We spent half our time on Ambergris Caye, and then went to the mainland and rented a car.  It's very easy to drive yourself.  We spent one night in the central part of the country where we visited the zoo and went cave tubing.  Then, we drove to San Ignacio where we stayed at the lovely little Table Rock Jungle Lodge.  I highly recommend these jungle accommodations!  They have great food and brilliantly romantic, intimate ambiance.  From there, we toured ATM cave, went to lots of Mayan ruins, and drove to Guatemala to see Tikal.

It's a wonderful trip with lots of variety and the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure.
