What a Weekend.. Dress Shopping

Well I have been secretly looking for dresses in Tampa, when my mom told me to specifically wait until my trip home in two weeks. I have been a little excited about going to Demetrios Salon here in Tampa, to try a few dresses. I went to a bridal show with another friend, and they had a booth, so I signed up to go in during their trunk show. ::: The experience was HORRIBLE:: I went with two of my 9BM, so we are assigned a consultant, I can not even remember her name, come to think of it I do not think she gave us her name. She asked me what I was looking for, and not looking for. Then she told me to look through the dresses, OKAY. Why would you ask me what I was looking for if you were not going to pull anything. So we pulled some dresses, for the most part, the dresses were all like sizes 8, streets size 4-6. I am a size 9/10. So of the thousand dresses in the store, there were maybe 3 in a 10 or 12 I could try on. By this point I am feeling a little down, and BM are trying to cheer me up, because for 1. I am not fat, but Im not skinny either, but damn, can't a girl try on a dress in her size. So I tell the consultant my frustration, and she basically in so many words says that the average bride is a dress size 6-8 so they usually make their sample dresses to fit average size brides. A part of me wanted to go straight Diary of Mad Black Woman on this chick, but I couldn't. I didn't want to catch a charge, so I come out the dressing room, and tell my BM's who entail rips the woman and the manager whom came over to defend her comments, a new one. Needless to say I didnt find my dress there. So we ended up going to this other bridal boutique and had the total opposite experience, I tried on some Maggie's, Casablanca's and Winnie Couture. I didn't find "the" dress, but the owner Olga was so sweet, and told me if I found a dress on one of her designer sites she would order it in my size to try on, because she carried samples in sizes 10-14, she just didnt have ALL of the designer's line in the store at that given time. It felt good to go somewhere and try on dresses and not feel like a pot belly pig. Hell I could actually get into a dress size 10 and 12, the 10 was tight, but it gave me chance to see if I liked the gown:) Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.::On a good note, she carries Bari Jay so my BM got to try on their dress, and it is even more gorgeous in person:::

You've just described the good and the bad.  I didn't go through the typical experience of going dress shopping.  I'm so glad I didn't!Will you be buying your dress from that last boutique or will you buy it in Miami?

Yay for getting your "feet wet" with dress shopping. It sucks that you had that negative experience at the Demetrios place but yay for having a good one at the other salon. It's amazing how different all the stores are. I wasn't able to fit into most of the samples I tried on but at least I could get an idea in some cases... but to say that the average bride is a 6-8 is ridiculous... more like a 12 I would think!

You'll find the right dress Kaila. At least now you know what to look for in a store/consultant and what not to. Good luck!

Ugh, sorry you had to go through that. Dress shopping is tough, especially when the dress doesn't fit. I don't know if they have checked lately, but the average size woman is not a 6-8 anymore. I am so happy to hear of another Bari Jay dealer! Orlando only has 2 and my girls wont make it down to Miami before the wedding. Did they have lots of styles??? Would you mind posting the name of the shop so I could call and see if they have samples of what I am looking for? Thanks!

What is with some of these people they hire to work in bridal salons? They are dealing with girls who are going through a happy time in their lives and the consultants feel the need to bring the brides down. Sorry you had to go through that but don't worry, you'll find the one!

I've heard some real horror stories about Bridal consultants being horribly rude to customers and giving them complexes! At least you tried the first store, and I'm glad you had a better experience in the second one. Keep on lookin!
