Just Engaged and Proposals

Ring Question...

My fiance and I got engaged several weeks ago, and it was a complete surprise for me -- we had discussed marriage in the past, but I had no idea he was even ring shopping. Luckily, he has great taste and I absolutely LOVE the ring he got me: a 1.75 carat solitaire set in platinum. It's a radiant cut which is what I wanted, but it's a bit on the rectangular side. While it's absolutely perfect, unfortunately I know it's going to be difficult to find a wedding band that sits perfectly. I do not want a curved wedding band because I want the option of wearing the band without the ering in the future. I suppose I could wear the ering on my right hand eventually, but what are everyone's thoughts on gaps between the band and the ering? At this point that's what I'm leaning towards...

Re: Ring Question...

  • Really, you won't know until you go shopping and actually try on rings.  I had no idea what I wanted or what my options even were until I went and tried wedding bands on.  You may think you won't like a gap but you may go shopping and find the perfect fit for your ring.

  • Yup.  Go to a jewelry store and try stuff on.  I was having a hard time picturing a band that would look good with my ring, but when I dropped it off at the jewelry store to get appraised, I tried on wedding bands.  You really won't know what's going to look right to you until you try some stuff on.

  • I will have the same problem, and to tell you the truth, I don't think I want a wedding band. my fingers are so short and my ring so big that I think anything over a 2mm band will look gaudy. I think i want my e-ring to serve as my wedding ring too. Its the symbolism that counts, so FI has no problem with this.

Probably down the road when I get preggers and swell up, we will get just a little band for me to wear during that time.
FWIW, I think my ering is gorgeous and I can't imagine adding anything to it.

  • There's also the custom-made route.  We looked into this with my ring a bit, and it wasn't all that expensive, especially if you just start with an existing band and modify it a bit.

Really, just find a reputable jeweler and go in and try stuff on.  They'll be able to guide you in the right direction.

  • My engagement ring is an emerald cut.  The stone is pretty big so I would have had the gap in between.  I didn't want a gap either.  We went to a local jewelry store where they design and make jewelry.  The guy took my engagement ring and took the bottom part off of one side of the setting. It is hard to explain but the ring now sits over my wedding band.  I ended up getting a ring with round diamonds in a chanel setting for my wedding ring.
