My then boyfriend and I were on a mission trip in Uganda Africa in November. We had been dating for 13 months at this point, and had been discussing marriage. The two week trip was great, I had been feeling like he was going to propose but I kept telling myself he wasnt and that I shouldn't get my hopes up! So the last thursday we were in Uganda, three days before we would leave, our group climbed this hill/mountain called "the Rock" early one morning. My boyfriend and I didn't go because the day before had been really hard and we were exhausted. I didn't know this, but he had also made sure my roommate didn't let me go on the hike, just in case. He suggested that we get a few people to go with us that evening, at sunset, since we didnt get to experience it that morning. So he recruited his brother and another guy friend, and even set up for a driver to take us to the base of the Rock. So evening came, we left the orphanage where we had been hanging out all day to drive to the mountain. Uganda is really flat so this was considered a huge landform. We had to pay, about $7 each and we were escorted by two armed guides. The climb was hard. I'm not in bad shape, but I was about ready to quit halfway through! My boyfriend was so encouraging. His brother kept mentioning that we should hurry to make it for sunset. All I could think was "Whats so freakin important about sunset!? I'm dyin here!" Haha but we finally made it to the top. The view was breathtaking. It was perfectly sunset. We stood in awe, taking pictures and video. My boyfriend's brother had a professional camera and the other guy had a video camera, but i just thought they were to document the beautiful sunset. I could feel something, because as my boyfriend was standing beside me he seemed to be stalling and a little nervous. I complained about being sweaty and gross. "You're beautiful." He said. Ha, I thought. "Well, Jessica, while we are up here there is something I wanted to ask you." He said and smoothly pulled something from his pocket and knelt on one knee. "WHAT!!?!?" I said, laughing. Bue he looked up at me seriously. "Jessica, Will you marry me?" "What!? Oh my gosh!!" I gasped as he put the ring on, a temporary, because the real one he left in the US. He stood up and we embraced for a long while, laughing and crying. He pulled away soon though and asked me if I would like to make a formal statement. "YES!!!"

I found out later that he had had to request a special hike, and that the president of Hope4Kids (the group we were on the trip with) had to get the special government permission for us to go up after the group had gone in the morning.
And he told me his mom told him that I wanted to be proposed to in Africa, which I had told her a while ago but thinking it wouldnt really happen. It was the perfect mix of surprise and adventure!
