I want to be married, but who has the time? (longer than I expected. Sorry.)

FI and I are technically unengaged, but marriage and wedding chat is hardly uncommon in our household. We've been together for five years (This Wednesday, actually. Hooray for our half-a-decade-versary!), we've lived together for two, and I do ghostwriting for a wedding blog site. Needless to say, we have discussed wedding business before. We want to be married for several reasons, but we've been unsure about the right time for it.

My question for you fellow students is this:

What made you decide that now was the time for you?

I'm finishing up my last year of undergrad, as is he (he's a few years older, but took a little longer to figure out his career goals), and then I'm staying on for another year to earn my teaching credential. He's going into volunteer work/interning/the job market right away, but for me, the first few years of teaching can be taxing. It will be a long time before things calm down.
We want to be married before then, but I'm having a hard time figuring out WHEN.
Before I start the credential program?
After I finish?
After my first year of teaching?

That seems so far away now, and we've been acting "married" in every sense of the word for years.
All I want is the party to celebrate our relationship with friends and family, the legal recognition of a married couple, and (let's be honest) the social recognition that comes along with being a Mr. and Mrs.

Any advice? Personal stories? Fun anecdotes about how stupid hard it is to plan a wedding during a grad seminar?

Thanks!
