Anyone doing a heavy hors d'oeuvres reception?

Both my FI and I are from the Northeast where wedding receptions usually have heavy hors d'oeuvres during the cocktail hour and then a sit down dinner.  We want to have light hors d'oeuvres during cocktail hour and a heavy hors d'oeuvres reception, as we both prefer this style wedding.  I heard this type of reception is very popular down here.  But, I was wondering if the tables would look empty since they won't have silverware, glasses, napkins, etc?  How did you decorate the tables to compensate- or did you even need to?  Also, we can pay an extra 2.50/pp to have napkins, glasses, and silverware at the tables- but would this lead people to believe that there was a plated dinner coming after the hors d'oeuvres? Thanks!

I have been to two weddings where there were just appetizers (avoiding spelling the word :) Both had tables with centerpieces but no glassware/silverware, and you could sit whereever. I think it depends if you are having a seating plan, which is less typical with appetizer receptions, or if people can sit wherever they would like. What are you going to use for your favors? If they are individual favors maybe you could put those on the table so it wont look empty? Also, what size will the tables be? Tables than seat 10-10 people may look more empty than smaller tables.

I agree with katie about putting your favors on the table. We are also just doing heavy hor d'oeuvres and I have decided to just put the folded napkins on the tables, but we aren't doing plates and glasses. It's cheaper.

We are also doing heavy hors d'oeuvers but we are going to do it buffet style and also include grilled pork loins and jambalaya to anchor it.  We are putting the glasses, napkins and silverware on the table and the plates at the buffet.

i have no idea what we're doing for favors, but if we need them to decorate the tables, then we can make them individual.  i didn't even think about the favors.  i'm not sure i'd want to put napkins down if we're doing open seating, seems like there would be dirty napkins everywhere, idk.wildangel: i do like the idea of having the table set with those items, especially so guests don't have to go to the bar just to get water.  are you having open seating with that setup?
