Honeymoon in St. Augustine - Hotels?

The FI and I are getting married May 2013 and would like to honeymoon in St. Augustine.  We'll be driving down from West Virginia on a Monday and plan to leave the following Saturday, for a total of 4 days / 5 nights.  We're wanting something in St. Augustine Beach that's oceanfront AND affordable ($150 or less per night).  I've looked at the hotels listed on TripAdvisor and am favoring The Beacher's Lodge but am curious what else is out there.  Any suggestions?

  • Not much on the beach in St. Augustine to be honest.  Most people stay in downtown St. Augustine for the atmosphere and nightlife.  Try nearby Vilano Beach or Ponte Vedra for more (and nicer) beachfront options.  http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g34599-d249771-Reviews-Hampton_Inn_Suites_St_Augustine_Vilano_Beach-Saint_Augustine_Florida.html

We like to stay at The Agustin Inn and we're usually the only ones there when we stay (or at least it feels that way.)  My FI loves it because most of the rooms have in-room jacuzzis.  We usually only pay $109-119 per night plus we get a free homemade breakfast in the AM (quiche, fruit salad, coffee, etc...)

Wow, thanks for the tip!  The Augustin Inn looks lovely!  No ocean view like the FI wants, but it's much nicer than what I found so we might have to work something out :)

We've never stayed in a B&B / Inn before so I'm concerned of the flexibility.... is the Augustin Inn laid-back and the type of place where you can come and go as you please (within reasonable hours)?  And is it okay if we don't mingle with the other guests every day?  I'm just not sure of the etiquee with places like this.

  • We never even see guests except at breakfast and if you ask they will give you a tray and coffee in a carafe so you can eat in your room.  You get your own key and key code so you can come and go as you like all day.  We stay in the Majestic which is on a hallway with only 3 other rooms and those rooms have been empty every time we've gone (I guess most people like to stay in the main house.)

The staff is really nice and unobtrusive.  Let them know it's your honeymoon and they will probably (not promising!) leave a bottle of bubbly in your room the first night.  We also really like that it's one block off St. George Street which is the main tourist drag; close but far enough that evenings after 10pm are pretty quiet.  It's also only a block and a half to the Bay and a 10 minute drive to the beach.  You could always split your stay and stay a few nights in the B&B and a few nights on the beach.

We go every year for our anniversary and since we are planning our wedding in St. Augustine so it will likely be our anniversary spot for many years to come.
  • Just realized I made a huge typo on "etiquette" in the previous post... woops!

I've been looking at the Augustin Inn and I really love it!  FI is nearly sold on it too since it's within walking distance to everything downtown and he is fine with the short drive to the beach.  Neither one of us has ever been to St. Augustine (we've heard wonderful things from friends who have visited though) so it's really important that wherever we are is easily accessible to what we want to do.  I also read a few reviews online that said in the evenings, you can hear live music... that's so awesome as well!  Definitely a perk on our end.

We're favoring the Nottingham room right now because of the balcony... I love my outdoor space!  We won't be booking for another couple of months though, but I'm so glad you mentioned this place... it seems to fit our style perfectly.

Anyway, thanks so much for the recommendation!  We both appreciate it.  :)
