Transportation between ceremony and reception...

We're getting married at a church downtown and having the reception at a location about 7 blocks away (google maps says 15 minute walk). Is it ok to leave guests to get to reception by either walking or taking a cab if they want? We want to cut costs by not busing/trolleying people to and from but I'm not sure if this is asking people to walk too far.

I don't think 7 blocks is too far to walk as long as it's not winter. If you have elderly or handicapped guests, I would consider providing transportation for them.

Wait - are we expected to get people to and from ceremony - even in Chicago?  My reception is about 15 miles away from reception.  I was planning on getting limos for wedding party/immediate family but not for the 200 guests!  Is this improper?

It is not required that you transport guests but I do appreciate it as a guest when transportation is provided-especially in cases where the reception is far away from the hotel (which isn't the case here). We did but our family/friends are huge drinkers and we didn't want to have to worry about anyone driving themselves home.  We hired a shuttle to run back and forth between the hotel and venue. It isn't a requirement though.

Like PP, we provided transportation from the hotels to the venue and back home at the end of the night.  I felt better knowing that I gave people the option to drink like crazy and not have to drive.

We actually arranged to have cabs available at the church and at the reception so guests could transport easily. My mom just placed an order for 15 cabs with Flash Cabs to arrive at each location at the specified time. They showed up and it worked great since most of our guests were from out of town and have never needed to track down a cab before. For us it was a great solution to provide transport means without taking on the huge cost.

Also forgot to add... we let all of our guests know that cabs would be available so they didn't need to drive.
