Invite postage

I know this is a stupid question, but I really don't know what hand cancelling entails. I think it has to do with postage, but I really could be wrong.

Do you take your invites to the USPS, weigh them and buy the appropriate stamps?

As you can tell I'm clueless.

Thanks for your help.

We went to the Roselle post office and had them weigh a few and give us the amount of postage.  We bought the stamps put them on and then handed them back for hand cancelling. They told us it would be better to hand cancel since they were so stiff.
That means instead of running thru a machine they are stamped by hand .

I recently took my save-the-dates to the post office on fullerton/sheffield in Lincoln Park, handed them to the woman at the counter and told her they were wedding invites. We received ours (I mailed one to our address) the next day with NO markings on them whatsoever! It was crazy. Not even the typical black circle date thing on the front. I was amazed. For my save the dates, I really didnt care, but I can see the worth of that if you are getting nice calligraphy done for your invites.

    Hey Girl,

So hand canceling simply means that they hand stamp them instead of putting them through the automatic machine. It lessens the damage factor.

I brought my invites to the USPS on Canal/Harrison and put them all in a box, with the postage on them and wrote "hand cancel please" on a piece of paper and all sides of the box (what they told me to do) and they wisked them away to the USPS invitation mailing land. Everyone received them w/o any damage!

Also, prior to purchasing stamps, I brought one invitation, fully loaded for them to weigh, and they all required the .61 stamps.

    HTH! :)

Oh, ok. Great. I heard that you should send yourself one invitation first to see how it goes out. I might send out a handful to my mom and BMs to see how that works and that way it will be more that I won't have to worry about. =)

    Thanks ladies.

well, what happens if one of your invites moved recently or something happens where they have to mail it back to you? I sent my save the dates out a few months back, and I got a few sent back. One was a cousin who gave me the correct address, and for some strange reason it got sent back with all these stamps all over it saying "NO Such Address" or something to that fact. I had to resend it in a new envelope. Is there a way that you can prevent the USPS from tagging your wedding envelope incase they have to send it back to you????????
