Modern Wedding in Suburbia?

I would love to have a very modern-looking wedding in a fashionable downtown Chicago hotel.  Unfortunately, I can't afford to spend $150 a person for 200 people... I would love to hear some suggestions of less expensive venues, maybe outside the city, with a clean, modern look to them.  I feel like all I'm finding is the same white linen country club look in the suburbs.  Help!

Try the Metropolis in Arlington Heights, it is pretty cool. I don't know if it is much less in price, but worth a look. Good Luck!

the other option is looking for a place that allows your own caterer. a good example is prairie production. they rent relatively cheap. I think it was around $3000-$3500 and you can then find a catering company that offers lower pricing.

You may like Entourage on American Lane in Schaumburg, Pinstripes, or The Onion Pub.  I know there are also several venues that have tented spaces, which I have seen turned into cool modern spaces with the right decor.

Have you looked at the Stongegate in Hoffman Estates?  That was probably the most modern that we found when we were looking in the suburbs (well, in our price range anyway).

    Here's a slideshow of pics...

Check out The Arista Hotel in Naperville. It is new and the decor is very modern.
    Not your typical hotel ballroom.

If you decide to go with a space that allows a caterer, try MariosEvents in Worth, IL, their pricing is great, food is great (I just had a tasting) the owner made me some specialty dishes that will be served at our reception. I highly recommend them. They have been great to work with. The 5 course family style dinner, cake and bar, and some sweets for 100 people is costing me 5K. This doesn't include a tip. Tips are paid directly to the waitstaff after the event and you choose from 6-15%. They don't tac on the usual 18%. I really liked this!!!!
You can choose within your price range because the menu is extensive. They are bringing in all glasswear, silverware, and linens at no extra cost. THis is part of their package. It is a great budget caterer. EVERYTHING is on their website:

I'm not sure how many people you plan on having; but there are still some options in the city. Check out A New Leaf another place to look is Volo in Roscoe Village. There are different loft spaces too. I got married in 2000 and then it seemed there were so little choices and I know how you feel. We ended up just doing a destination wedding. But I would still search it out and see what your options are. Do you need to do a formal sit down dinner? If not that can save you a lot by using your own caterer and renting a space.

    Good luck! and Best Wishes!

Try the Westin Northshore in Wheeling.  It is pretty new, only a few years old.  Also, maybe Mission Hills, in Northbrook?  It is a country club, but has really tall windows in the main room. Independence Grove is similar, but also looks over a lake.
