Has anyone used Oak Mill Bakery?

My FI and I went for a cake tasting today and didn't even get to the tasting part because of sticker shock.

The cost of the cake we wanted was $1300 for 200 people.  Our venue works with them and has a package for their brides which would bring our cost to $750, which seems really high to me.

They didn't seem very flexible, for example the charge $1.25/person for pastiage flowers.  Even if you only want 10!

Has anyone used Oak Mill Bakery and had a different experience?  They seem very expensive.

We have used Oak MIll Bakery for smaller occasions such as birthdays.  The cake was delicious but very expensive.

They have several locations, so each location has different personnel to work with.  I think the corporate office is Des Plaines.

I think the basic price of most wedding cakes start at $2.50 per slice.  Find out if you can "cost out" of their preferred bakery and shop around for prices.  Not sure what area you are in, but I can tell you there are many excellent options if you are in the northwest suburbs.  Continental Central Bakery, The Baking Institute in Wheeling, Deerfields, Jarosch in Elk Grove. Lovin' Oven in LIbertyville......lots of long standing, mainly family owned bakeries.

I used Oak Mill in Niles because the cake was included in my package with the Westin, so I didn't have a choice. The venue paid for it so I can't speak to how reasonable (or unreasonable) their prices are. My tasting experience was really pretty pathetic, and the service I received was frustrating, but the cake they delivered on our wedding day was really wonderful. Full review in married bio.

We did a tasting there, and it was the only place that charged us any money- $25- for the tasting.  We paid it because it was the first place we tried and we didn't know any better.  We just wanted cupcakes and we could have bought one in each of the flavors we wanted for A LOT less than $25...lesson learned, oh well.

Anyway, they wanted almost $1000 for 175 cupcakes....no filling, no fancy frosting.  Just cupcakes.  Oh, and a 8" cake for the top, decorated relatively plainly, which they wanted $75 for!

After trying two more bakeries, we ended up going with Molly's Cupcakes in Lincoln Park.  You'd think the cupcake bakery in the city would have been more expensive than the three traditional bakeries in the suburbs, but you'd be wrong.

That said, I have bought stuff there before and it's been very good, but their wedding prices are ridiculous.  Same with Jarosch in Elk Grove Village.  We had quite an experience with them....
