NWR: Hotel Rec in Downtown

FI and I are planning a mini vacation near the end of this month to Chi-town. I have been checking Expedia, Travelocity etc for rates on hotels in/right near Downtown. Does anyone know of anywhere they offer discounts such as AAA or active Police/Fire? Some of the travel sites do not accept those discounts and it would save a lot of calls if you know of any. If not, that's cool too.

Also, we have both been there before and seen all of the "big things" (museums, etc) and want to know if there are any less famous but just as good spots we should hit, like a great restaurant or kitschy store that won't be on the Mile?  2 day trip, Thurs through Sat evening, end of this month, any recs appreciated!

TIA!

    Oooo...I love get-away weekends!!!

I just booked a trip through Orbitz, and then did a search on google for orbitz discounts, and I saved myself $50.

Not sure if you're looking for hotel recommendations, but the W Lakeshore is amazing! We've also stayed at the Hard Rock, which is nice...

I definitely recommend Ruth's Chris Steakhouse!!! It's FI and my favorite place to dine, in the city. He also proposed to me there, so it holds a very sweet spot in my hear. :)

Another great spot for lunch (or a martini and appie) would be Grand Lux Cafe. They have THE best desserts!!! They make you order them right away because they bake them then and there. Mmmm....just thinking about it.

    Have fun!

I love the James Hotel, although I don't think it is super inexpensive. If you want some other shopping areas, check out Armitage and Halsted or Damen and North Ave. Both less "touristy" with cool boutiques.

Ditto on the Hard Rock Hotel.

Some off-the-beaten path places to check out:

Wishbone, Morgan and Washington Sts. west loop. Great food.
Jane Addams Hull House Museum on West Halsted near UIC.
Cuatro, Cermak and Wabash, south loop.  Great latin food and live latin music on the weekends.
