How Much For The Cake?

I am planning a wedding reception for between 100 and 130 people in a NW suburb and am not yet ready to talk to anyone about making me a cake, but I have really no clue how much they run for and I am working on my budget.

I know I want a simple tiered fondant covered layered cake probably with pearls and fresh flowers

What price range can I expect?  Does anyone have any recommendations on where to get it?

Hi CurlyKaty---I recognized your Alaska/NW suburb bio and remembered you from earlier posts.  If you are still considering having your reception at Key Lime Cove, I would highly recommend this bakery:
    http://www.lovinovencakery.com/about/

They have two bakeries, both of which are very near Gurnee.  They are extremely popular in the suburbs here and do fantastic work!  They had a booth at a wedding expo, ironically at Key Lime Cove, last Spring, to which my daughter and I attended.  Their cakes were out of this world!

Pricing is very much dependent on the type of cake, filling and frosting you are looking for....fondant typically being the most expensive.  I have read that you can budget anywhere from $1.75 to $3.50 per slice, with a typical 100+ person wedding costing about $600---give or take.  Perhaps if you mention the wedding expo at Key Lime Cove they may offer a promotional rate??  Good luck!

Mobkaz - Thank you for your response!  You are proving to be my wedding planning angel!  I dont know if Ill be using Key Lime Cove because it doesn't fit my original image at all....but its definitely still on the table.  Whether we use Key Lime Cove or not, we will still be in that area so thank you for your recommendation!!

Love is Bald - Thank you for your response too, its good to know a broader geographic range!

Some venues will give you the cake because it's included in their package (our venue did) However, if you want to do unique flavors (like, red velvet for example) or want something like fondant, it definitely will be more expensive.

I'm a bride who doesn't want to spend a ton on the cake.  We decided to have a small cake to cut that a baker friend of mine is making. One tier will be real cake that we will cut and keep for our 1st anniversary and the other two tiers will be styrofoam!  Then we will have delicious sheet cakes in the kitchen that will be cut and served.  FI asked for one thing out of this wedding and that was to have white cake with whipped cream frosting from Meijer.....so I figure I can give that to him :-)  Also, it seriously is delish!

I live in the NW burbs and the average price per slice I found was about $3.50 for non fondant and $4.50 for fondant. Lovin' Oven is really good, quite a few of my friends and family recommended them when we were looking. We are going with Tarts & Truffles in Woodstock who are really good as well.
