How many people are you inviting to your welcome dinner?  I don't think it's bad to have a cash bar for a welcome dinner, but I'm not really sure how that would work at a restaurant.  Would you tell your guests that they have to go to the bar to order drinks instead of having the waiter bring drinks to the table? We had a Welcome BBQ and I highly recommend it because it didn't cost too much for alcohol from Costco.  We returned the leftover unopened alcohol.   We had our rehearsal dinner at the Flatbread Pizza Company in Paia and since it was a pizza place, people only ordered beers, which is a lot cheaper than cocktails.  HTH!

Where will you guys be staying?  We had our rehearsal dinner at the Maui Brewing Company in Kahana (on the west side between Kaanaplai & Kapalua).  It's a very casual, laid-back restaurant.  I've got a more detailed review on my bio if you're interested.

thank you guys so much. we're inviting all guests to our welcome dinner, and it looks as if almost all who are attending the wedding will be making it.  that total right now is about 65 and will quite possibly rise to 80.we're staying at the maui hill resort.  we tried to see if could rent out their pool area, but i'm not sure if they actually do that.  they gave us an odd response saying we could reserve it, but that we'd have to share with the poolgoers.  we were looking in the tropical maui plantation and i think the guests would have to order at the bar.  which i do think is a bit odd.  bi like the bbq idea.  especially b/c we want to provide some hula dancers as entertainment.  did you rent out a space?

For our welcome dinner, we held it at the condo we were staying at.  It worked out great.  It sounds like the resort you're at won't let you just reserve the space.  This might be way too casual for you but have you considered just going to a beach park?  Lots of beaches have grills available.

We did it at the Kamaole Sands condo in Kihei.  They had a bunch of different BBQ areas.  There's also a BBQ pit across the street at the park/beach.  I think it was Kamaole Park II.  A BBQ would be the cheapest option, especially with so many guests.  If you are going to do a BBQ, I would suggest having at least 2-3 grills. I'm not sure how the food is at the Maui Tropical Plantation, but another option is having a catered BBQ or luau.  You can find a (free) park near the beach and have them cater.  I think some of the knotties are using http://www.maui-catering-cjs.com/.

thank you guys so much! i'll definitely look into the free parks/beaches.  we never even considered that. would you know of any ordinances that would prohibit having your private hula dancers/entertainment there?
