"fancy" disposables vs real china and glasses

First of all I'd like to apologize for stalking this board, using it to gather ideas and not contributing anything in return. The amount of detail you ladies share and ideas you collaborate on is commendable. When I finally figure out how to make a website I'll get my planning bio up there for you...but it will be awhile. So my caterers, Kahala Catering, have proposed "fancy disposables", i.e. plastic plates and glasses. We are having our wedding and reception at a private house that has indoor and outdoor areas. It just doesn't seem appropriate for an evening wedding reception. Am I missing something? Have you ladies encountered this at other weddings or your own. Many Thanks, K

We are going with this option for our reception. But our reception is more low-key and casual. Honestly, I couldn't tell that they were disposable. They look like the real thing.

I always prefer the real stuff. I like that it's heavier, and it makes me feel (whether it's true or not) that I'm being more environmentally friendly.

I'm with Kaesha.  I like the weight of a plate, feeling like there is something there.  I have 2 kids and refuse to use paper products even at home.  It's one of those weird things for me though.

FI and i are currently debating this same issue.  Both caterer and WC suggested it as a way of saving $.  I feel the same way as Kaesha.   I like the weight of a real plate and it seems like a contradiction to spend so much on the wedding and food and not include the plates.  Caterer said: If it won't bother you to use disposables go for it and save the money, he said it doesnt look bad. But if you will keep thinking 'oh I wish I had gone with the chinaware' then just go with the real stuff.  You only get married once and you don't want to have regrets. As far as being green, another option could be using bamboo products (plates and utensiles).  Not sure about the costs though.

I am also going with Kahala Caterers.  I had the chance to actually see their "fancy" disposables, as I was also very concerned!!  They really are pretty nice and I couldn't tell a difference just from looking.  But obviously, when you pick them up they are much lighter.  Overall though - I loved the look!!
