DIY centerpieces

Hi! Anyone have any good ideas for DIY centerpieces? I'm actually considering forgoing flowers for the centerpiece and doing something different and engaging. I have no idea where to start though.Anyone have ideas? I thought it would be cool to have a game in the middle like. Connect four maybe? I need ideas!

I love connect four!!! I love the manzanita & mitsumata trees.http://www.nettletonhollow.com/branches.html

Connect four sounds so fun!  The challenge will be to decorate around it a little so that it still looks festive (and the flowers or whatever around it matching/coordinating with the connect four thing).  But I really love that idea!

We are doing a glass bowl with sand, a few seashells and a candle inside. We will probably sprinkle some orchids on the table around the bowl.

I am also doing pineapples, and different sized mason jars filled with sand and a votive candle. We might space the pineapples out and add a flower arrangement in between each one, or we might just sprinkle orchid petals around the candles/pineapples!

You could always do favor centerpieces, I've seen really cute ones here and there.  I'll keep my eye out for ideas!  Have you looked at the Style Me Pretty blog?  They have  a DIY section.  It's a great site for inspiration...

I love the pineapple idea, but your right that it might not be enough. I also like the idea of the favor centerpieces but we aren't sure if we are doing favors yet or not. I wanted something interactive and a conversation piece. I'm extremely practical so I want them to double as something like a fun game. I do plan on having some shabby chic fabric square cut out in the middle, I just don't know what to put on it!

You could really get creative with non-floral centerpieces! If you were to use board games (which I think is a super fun idea!), what will you do with them after the wedding?  Maybe you could donate them to a school or something?  Or give them away to the children (if you're having kiddies at your wedding).Maybe you could do a cluster of photos of you and FI in the center of the table, framed in various-sized cute photo frames? Could be photos of both of you as a couple (e-pics, photos from vacations, etc.), as well as photos from your childhood ("hanabata" days :P). Your guests could make use of the photo frames if you were to give them away. Here's a cute idea from Martha Stewart: http://www.marthastewart.com/article/photo-centerpieceIf you wanted to do something more like a game, maybe you could do the "guess how many ___ in the jar" thing. For example, you could fill some cute small, medium and large-sized jars with candies (maybe in your wedding colors), with the same number of candies per jar size on each table. Have your guests guess how many and announce the actual numbers during the centerpiece giveaway.Just a couple of options. I know you've got some time, but keep us posted on what you decide!

Another idea that would get your guests to interact with one another would be to put a decorative hatbox or gift-wrapped box at the center of your tables.  Fill each box with identical various items.  At some point during the reception, each table opens their boxes and has to do something with the items...guess what they all have in common, build something with it (a la MacGyver :P), etc.  A special prize could be awarded to which ever table is the first to guess the common theme or builds the best ____.

haha that's hilarious! I feel like with the games like that it ends up being more like a bridal shower though. One thing about the centerpiece is that it's a destination wedding so people don't necessarily have to take them home.

If you want something fun and interactive... For our cocktail table centerpieces, we used a large square glass vase that was filled with sand and some shells. We then tucked vintage Hawaiian postcards under the glass. A sign leaning against the glass instructed guests to write us a postcard with advice and well wishes, in lieu of a guest book. Pics in bio! HTH!

Oh, I see.  It wasn't exactly clear to me how "interactive" and "engaging" you wanted your centerpieces to be so I just threw some ideas out there.

Nicole! I love your ideas though! I really appreciate your input. Your so cute with all of your ideas!Mostly I'm just cheaping out of floral centerpieces, and it's unlike me to not do something out of the ordinary.
