PSA: DIY hand calligraphy

Hi ladies. Just wanted to pass along a cool DIY project I stumbled across. We ended up picking a colored envelope for our invites (PIB), and we want to do white hand calligraphy. It's pretty expensive to hire someone, and my handwriting is crappy. Well, this blogger came up with a way to DIY even if you have no calligraphy training. Print the addresses first on the envelopes in an ink color just barely darker than your envelope and then write over it with the calligraphy pen. I'm going to try it at some point. (We get our invites in a couple of months--had to order them early since we were getting them with a special discount--but won't be sending them out until February.) I just did my invites with DIY calligraphy, it's soooo much fun. Props to the girl who came up with the idea. I went to dafont.com and downloaded some fonts that look like much much prettier versions of my own handwriting, that makes the tracing easier 'cuz it's semi-natural. i downloaded three types of fonts 'cuz sometimes the spelling of someone's name looks better in one font versus another. You should def try it!

Great tip!  I would check with the post office first, though.  I've read that their sorting machines have trouble reading white printing on a colored background.  I'm not sure if this is entirely accurate, but it wouldn't hurt to check.  :)

Ya, we were totally going to do that, but we totally ran out of time.  It is a great idea though and will look amazing. my aunt works for the post office and we asked her about the fancy fonts - If the sorter can't read the address, then it gets spit out and hand read.  I don't know if they would charge you extra - i.e. if you invitation is thick and can't go through the sorter, they charge you extra (which is why we nixed a bow on the pocketfold), but if it's the right width and the machine can't read it because of the font, you're probably fine.
