Hawaii

i am new and looking for advice...the big island?

hi everyone! my fi and i decided to get married in hawaii in june 2010. i am japanese and he is american, so to be fair for both families, we took the middle! we are thinking about hilo in big island, we liked its historical back ground. but having never been there before, really not sure where to start, where to look for. i am hoping you ladies here could give me pointers! at the moment we are thinking about non-religious ceremony with about 40-45 guests, then head for luau somewhere. our budget is tight too, so we are not really looking for anything too fancy. oh, and a big question...for the date, we are thinking about june 12, 2010...i know that june 11 is a huge holiday in hawaii...is it crazy to try to get married on june 12th? i am also having a hard time finding wedding coordinator/reception site in hilo. should we look for somehere else on the big island? any advice is appreciated since neither of us has been to hawaii and know nothing!thanks!

Aloha,  The only advice I have is Hilo is much much rainier than Kona.  It is beautiful but Kona has some very spiritual and historic places and its usually sunny.Beth

Congratulations on your engagement! I'm originally from Hilo and I can tell you it is rainy! Still some very pretty, natural places on the outskirts, but not many "resorts." FI is from Kona so that is where we are planning on having our wedding in Oct 2010. Its much drier and there are several resorts. Others places to look are Waikoloa, Kohala coast, and Waimea (although can also be rainy but very pretty!). Some beautiful resorts include Four Seasons Hualalai, the Fairmont Orchid, and Mauna Lani.We are considering either the Royal Kona Resort or a private estate in Kona mainly because we are having so many "locals" attending and need a place where we can bring some of our own food (any others from HI probably know what I mean...lol!). Anywhere in HI that you choose will be beautiful, but the Big Island is my favorite (sorry, I'm a little bias). Best of luck and let me know if you have any more Q's! :)

Oh, if you like historical sites, check out Hulihe'e Palace in Kona. Its an old victorian house of the Hawaiian royal family. Its right on the water and beautiful! Especially at sunset!

I got married in Kona a few months ago & it was beautiful...though it did lightly rain (kind of misted).  It never rained hard enough that we had to move inside.  They said it was all caused by the vog so hopefully the volcano has calmed down.   Rain or no rain, I love Kona & thought it was a great place to get married.  Check out my married bio for pics of the wedding & reception location.Good luck!
