Flying with your wedding gown

Aloha Knotties! So it just occurred to me that I'll have to travel on a plane with my wedding dress. The wedding is still a ways away, but I want to be prepared.   Can anyone provide details on how they traveled with their gown? I want to bring it on the plane with me, but need to know how to best make this happen. Can you also let me know what airline you flew? We will probably be taking American Airlines from Los Angeles to Maui. Any info is much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi!  Haven't done it myself yet but other girls have said that they stow it in the first class coat closet for you.  I think some have had problems with Southwest b/c there's no first class cabin, but if you're on American, I don't think it would be a problem. Other girls ship theirs to a dress steamer in Maui and then it's ready for them to pick up with they get there...I think it's Elly's formal wear that did that, I can't remember. I'm sure several others will chime in here with their experiences.

I plan on taking the dress on the plane with me and asking them to put it in the closet. I've heard of many girls doing this. I would hope that the flight attendants would be more than happy to do since its a special occassion! Even if it does get wrinkled, you can get it steamed/pressed before the wedding at Elly's like Liz said. I think that is what Leah/lelekay did before her wedding last month.

yup! i'm taking mine on the plane with me. If there's no room in first class, I'll try laying it flat on top of bags in the overhead compartments. I'd rather have it with me at ALL TIMES than mail it!!!

I flew Hawaiian and they put it in the first class closet for me on the SF to HNL flight.  Then on the HNL to Maui flight, I had to stow it in the overhead compartment because they didn't have the closet on those smaller planes.  Luckily, there was an empty overhead compartment.   I got my dress steamed at Elly's in Kihei.

Oh yeah...Hawaiian was very nice.  They let us board the plane first because of my dress.  :-)

We flew WestJet to Maui and the plane we were on didn't have a closet for passengers.  I laid my dress on top of the bags in the overhead compartment.  It was a bit wrinkly when we got there, but Elly's steamed it out for me.  Plus I bought a really pretty pearl bracelet while I was in there :)I loved travelling with my wedding dress.  Everyone asks about your wedding, and you get to board the plane early.  So fun!

I flew United.  The flight attendants were really nice.  As soon as they saw me, they offered to put my dress in the first class closet.  Oh and don't worry too much about TSA.  At least we didn't have a problem with it.  The dress was in a garment bag so it was fine that they put it on the conveyor belt.

I flew Hawaiian from LAX to HNL.  They put my dress in the first class closet in the front of the plane.  No problems at all!

We flew American and they offered to put it the first class cabin/closet.  No problems or issues with the entire process!  :)kandj:  depending on the material of your dress, you may or may not have to get it steamed again.  I actually did not have my dress steamed before I left 'cause I knew I was going to fly with it so I didn't bother.  When I arrived in Maui, my WP at the Hyatt said it didn't even need to be sent out.  She just quickly ran a hand steamer over it and voila!  :)

My advice would be to keep the dress with you at all times. One wedding I was in the bride checked hers in and the airlines lost it. She was crushed and bc they never recovered it she ended up going to JcPenny's hours before the ceremony and wore a dress she hated. She even cancelled her photographer bc she didnt want pics in that dress. yikes
