When to open?

I received a wedding gift in the mail today!  When do I open it and when do I send the thank you?  I assume it should be opened right away and I should send the thank you right away.  Is that correct?

We opened and sent thank yous right away. It felt good to get them done before the wedding.

Yes, open the gift and send a TY note.  That way, the sender knows that you received the gift.
