cake cost

Ugh, I just found out (after getting the wrong info from Buttercream) that with extra charges, the cake I thought I was going to have will now cost around $1000. I'm sorry, nothing tastes that good.  I am really reconsidering now. Thinking I'll do a small cake to cut and cupcakes for the guests.  Who has the best cupcake prices?  I feel like I am starting all over again :(

I'm not sure about their prices but Cupcake has really good cupcakes, and a huge amount of flavors.

Have you shopped around for a cake maker, or is Buttercream the only one you looked at?  Since you're not using fondant and the design is fairly simple, depending on your guest list size, I'm sure you can do better than $1,000 for it.  Have you looked into Wuollet (I ask because this may qualify for one of their lower pricing tiers) or Jessica's Cakes?  For 130 guests, we're getting a 4-tier fondant cake with mousse/ganache/custard fillings for $875.

We have done tastings with Queen of Cakes (possibility), Key's (def not), and have them set up with Cake Box and Jack's.   Are you using Wuollet? I had heard they were pretty pricey. We are estimating around 200 guests and don't want fondant.

I don't have their price guide anymore, but our estimate from Wuollet for 130 guests at the very top price tier was $960.  We're not using them because Jessica's Cakes came in lower and we prefer working with an independent designer, but the cake itself at Wuollet was fantastic.  Unfortunately, Wuollet doesn't have their price guide online, but maybe they could email it to you.  It's just a half-sheet with cake sizes and prices.  I'd be shocked if they charged you more than $650 for your design.

We're going to do a little cake and cupcakes too. I haven't gotten pricing yet, but Cocoa + Fig was recommended by our venue caterer.

Martiac...my quote from Woullet was around $600 for 160 servings.  However, if we go with them we'd be getting a smaller tier cake (~100 servings I believe) and sheet cake to cover the rest.  The sheet cakes would be with same flavors/fillings.  Wuollet is nice because they let you try different filling, cake and icing combinations.  We did our tasting with Sarah at the 50th St. location in Edina (acutally I think they do all their tastings there).  GL!

\Muddy Paws Cheesecake has two different sizes of mini cupcake cheesecakes, if you're going with cupcakes... I know cheesecake isn't everyone's thing, but they are so yummy! They're very easy to work with, too. Just a thought...

We got ours from Keys Cafe in White Bear Lake and paid about $500 for 225 pieces +topper (including tax). Here's what we got for that:

    • Pumpkin cake with brown butter frosting and chocolate ganache/browned butter filling.
    • Chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream and raspberry mousse filling.
    • We had a 3-tier cutting cake with ~50 pieces total (not including topper), and the rest were served from sheet cakes (same flavors and fillings). What was nice about the sheet cakes was that every piece had a garnish of a piece of white chocolate and raspberry.

You can get cheap cupcakes @ Sam's club.  That is what we are doing and then have a small cake for 'our cake'.  I'm sorry but spending any outrageous amount on a cake is ridiculous to me...my FI and are not 'sweets' type of people.  My friend got married a couple months ago and spent $500 on a cake that she says was pointless...no one saw us cut it and was only used for our first slice with pictures...

We are using an independent licensed baker named Terry - I have several friends who have used her for their wedding cakes and have heard nothing but great things!  Its definitely not the fanciest with 100 different flavors to choose from, but her cakes are beautiful and extremely tasty.  Everything is made from scratch, she doesn't use fondant (thankfully, IMO - gross!!), and the best part is that our quote is under $200 for a 4-tier cake and two sheet cakes.  Let me know if anyone wants her info!

</div><div>This completely depends on the quality of the cake. We had very little left-over cake because lots of people came back for seconds - they couldn't get enough. I'm a picky cake person and if the cake at a wedding isn't especially yummy I'll skip it for sure, though. Why waste the calories? :)</div><div>
</div><div>However, if you aren't "sweets" type of people, you don't have to do cake at all. I think it's still nice to offer something sweet as dessert for your guests, but you're certainly not limited to cake. Would you and your FI be more excited about something like apple crumble, cheesecake, pies, a chocolate fondue bar w/ fruits and pretzels, etc?

Have you tried Grandma's in White Bear? Their prices are really low-- like $2.75 a slice. Another option is to do a smaller cake with sheet cake. Nobody can tell the difference.

I love sweets and the cake is important to me, but so is not breaking the bank.  I def want a small cake for us and for pictures.  I love the sheetcake idea, but the problem is with our venue.  If we use another vendor it will cost us another $1.50 per person to have them cut and serve it. I could avoid this by having someone else cut the cake, but would also need to provide the plates, forks and napkins (dumb) and I really don't want to do this....that's why I am thinking cupcakes, cause all you need is a napkin and people can just help themselves.  Of course I want the cupcakes to be delilcious, and I've heard of Sam's, does Costco do cc, I have a membership there?

Jenn - can you give me your friend's info?  martiac225@yahoo.com
    Thanks!

Yeah... I don't think it's fair to say cake is a waste of money at all.

We had enough servings for almost 250, and only 150 showed.... there was not a single piece left.  That's how good our cake was.  It was Penny Steele, who is pricey though.

Don't forget you have in add $1.50pp if you're having PEC cut it. boo.

We did individual cakes (10") on each table from Sam's Club.  They were like $12.50 each.   They also have 30 cupcakes for about the same price.  These are pretty plain....our cakes were just plain white frosting and we had both chocolate and white.   We had our florist provide flowers for the tops of each cake.  Everyone raved about how good the cake was and I think we spent about $275 total for 150ppl.   Here's a pic.....sorry its not very good - from a cell phone camera - but you get the idea.

We love the Cake Box!  FI's family has been getting cake from there for years.  I've only had the chocolate w/chocolate frosting though, mmm now I want some.  That being said, I haven't tried the other bakeries that are popular.

CUPCAKE IS AWESOME!!! We had them for our wedding, and the prices were suuuper reasonable. It's the exact same price as buying them in the bakery, which means they vary from $1.95 to $2.95 per cupcake, depending on the complexity of the flavor. No extraneous 'catering' upcharges or anything like that. They include a 6-inch cake for cutting for $20 extra... and you can rent a cupcake tower from them for $50, I think. Everyone at the wedding raved about them. Alicia, theire catering manager, is an absolute doll to work with, too.

Our Penny Steele cake was about $600 for a grooms cake + 5 tier cake (only one real tier though) servings for about 150, we too had ZERO cake left!!! Everyone raved about the cake, many tried all 3 flavors we had! (red velvet, grand marnier & caramel apple).

Definitely try Penny Steele - if you or FI is military you get 10% off  :)
