New to the Knot! And Hoping for Advice!

Hey everyone!

I'm brand new to the Knot and excited to get to know everyone on here - I have heard such wonderful things!  My fiance and I got engaged just over a month ago.  He surprised me with a proposal mid-kayaking excursion on a small, isolated beach.  We were both in our active wear and baseball caps - so the engagement was very fitting of our shared love for sports and the outdoors. :)  I can't wait to get married but am feeling slightly overwhelmed by the amount of planning it will take to get there.

We are still in the beginning stages of the wedding planning.  We have got a pretty solid guest list and a budget set, and now we are working to choose a venue in conjunction with a wedding date.  Our vision for the reception is a semi-formal garden party type atmosphere w/a lot of plants/flowers, brightly colored table linens & decor, white chinese lanterns hanging overhead, and white lights strung about.

Does anyone have any recommendations for venues that might suit this type of reception?  We would definitely prefer to have some type of back up plan (indoor site) in case the weather doesn't cooperate on our wedding day.

My fiance and I live in the Florida Panhandle, which may create more challenges in planning a Minnesota wedding.  I am seriously considering the help of a wedding planner to help me choose venues and coordinate vendors.  Has anyone hired a wedding planner that they absolutely loved working with?  I am open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks! :)

What are you looking to spend on a venue and how many guests does it need to hold? There's a great variety of venues here that have varying space and whatnot.

First- welcome! and congrats!  Soak up all of this excitement now, before the stress hits ;)

Ditto SS- how many people are you looking to accommodate and is there a price you want to stay below?  You can browse through options in a few places, too.  Check out TK's list at: http://www.theknot.com/Vendors/Minnesota-Reception-and-Ceremony-Sites/Profiles/CAR/004.  They have lots of pictures usually, which is nice.

or you can check the MSP bio in my signature for more suggestions and reviews from previous brides :)

ETA: My first thought was the U of M's Arboretum (<click).  We looked into them and were thoroughly impressed; they just ended up being outside of our budget.

Thanks for the tips!  We are planning to have about 100 guests (so I guess kind of a smallish wedding?).  I feel like most ceremony sites (except for some of the smaller outdoor gardens) and reception sites can accommodate this number of people.

In regards to how much we are willing to spend on a venue, we have about $2500 allotted for the reception venue & rentals in our tentative budget.  That does NOT include: flowers, decorations, food, beverages, cake, or music.  So that is just strictly for the cost to rent the venue.
