April 2013 Weddings

Need Opinions - Favor question

I am PRO favors as an FYI so keep answers in mind.

Also our venue is the Lions Club (Beach House) so 100% of our price goes to seeing eye dogs training as well as eye glasses for the blind in our community, so socially I feel that is good.  Plus we joined to continue to help them.

With that said -

I bought vintage suitcases and have bought many pashminas in pale pinks, silver, beige, pale champagne color, navy, etc... (All hues of our wedding but also a lot of options). I am wrapping them in ribbon with a sign for the ladies.  Weather in the evening during April on the water can be chilly.

I have also bought lots of Old Navy thin band cute flip flops in many sizes in similar colors and am putting them in baskets.  For either sore dancing feet or for beach wedding.

I am creating a cigar bar for the men with matches that are engraved with our info in a cool vintage nautical feel. (I know not all men like smoking cigars tho).

I am also creating a vintage feel Candy bar.  All sorts of candies, meringues, french macarons, etc with cute bags for people to snack on there or take home.

I was ALSO - going to add a wine stopped for every place setting as the main favor. I was going to do a Murano glass Fluer de Lis wine stopper.  The murano glass is a nod to our honeymoon because we are going to Venice.  The Fleur de Lis is a nod to our engagement because we got engaged in New Orleans at Jazz Fest.

The wine stoppers are a bit pricey. So I am starting to cut some corners.

Do you think what I have BEFORE the wine stoppers are considered as favors? Or should I bite the buttet and get the wine stopper and cut other things?

Thoughts?

Like I said, I am pro favors (If they are nice).  In my friends circle, I have received nice favors which I FONDLY remember their wedding even a couple years later when using those items.    i.e, Wineglass, Margarita class, and one set of friends made a steak rub which we used for months and loved.   Things like that - not cheesy ones.

Yes I think everything else counts, that's more than enough stuff without the wine stoppers.

  • If you really love the wine stoppers, is there something else you could remove instead? Do you really need a cigar bar, or as many different candies?

With that being said, I do think that if you don't do the wine stoppers what you have planned is awesome!

  • The cigar thing I want to keep and it's actually VERY reasonable. I was going to have a roller but that was too much.  I have antique cohiba boxes and my fiance has been buying decent cigars.  Matches were printed months ago and we bought a couple of cutters.

It's also a nod to the area and my heritage.  Can you tell what a sap I am? LOL

Tampa is the cigar capital of the world (or was in it's heyday). My family were the first immigrant settlers from Sicily to Ybor City to work in the cigar factories.  Kind of a big deal here.  So our cocktail hour is totally themed in that matter.  Ybor/Floribian foods, Steel drum player, mojitos and bellini signature drinks, Cigars, etc

The candy bar isn't bad.  I am a baker (not professionally anymore but I did a own a small gourmet bakery for awhile) so I am making the sparkled champagne merigues (EASY!) and I am making a few dozen macarons.  The candies have been bought for the most part and I have kept them sealed.  (Jordan almonds, jelly bellies, etc)  so not a big deal and I really want to use all the gorgeous milk glass I have been collecting for a year.

So the only thing I haven't purchased yet is the wine stopper.  I do really like it but it's another $400-500 which I would rather invest in a planner.

So I was curious as brides and former wedding guests if this was enough or I should do it.

  • I think you have more than enough. I am not a wine drinker so I would be way more happy with food lol, especially desserts!

  • I think you have PLENTY. One thing I would recommend - is there any way you can tell people to take the candy home, that it's not just part of the dessert course? I've been to a few weddings now where nothing at the candy bar gets taken because nobody realizes it's a favor!
  • Thanks for the hint on the candy bar??  Should I put a sign up??

Any creative way to describe?  I am really excited because the adorable bags came in today in Navy and White Chevron stripes and Pale Pinks and Grey Chevron for the candy bar.  Really cute and vintage so I definitely would like people to take things home.  I am sure the cookies may be eaten there and I am ok with that but the candy should be a favor I think.

Hmm...other ladies here seem much more crafty than me and might have better ideas, but I think even just a little sign on the table saying like "please have a sweet treat to bring home" or something might be helpful. And then just kind of spread it word of mouth ("oh, aunt Suzy, did you get any sweets to bring home from the candy table? Yup, they're to take with you!")?
  • Thanks! Perfect :)

  • Maybe you could put a candy bag at each seat with a little note, and then more bags at the actual table? 'There is plenty to choose from, at the table of sweets. Please use this bag to take some home for later to eat'? It is too early lol I am not sure if that makes sense.

  • I think everything you has enough and you don't need to do the wine stoppers.  And honestly most people have them at home already and really ho wmany bottles of wine are open in peoples houses at once?

  • I canned the wedding stopped idea. Thanks everyone!

I am going to use what I have and spend that money on a planner to make the day go super smooth!

Since we have a wedding cake, a viennese table of desserts & late night french beignets being fried up with coffee - I am definitely using the candy bar as a TO-GO bar for a favor.  I am going to print up some cool Nautical Thank you for coming stickers and add them to the cute bags I ordered.  That way, they know it's a Thank you favor (or so I hope lol).
