Hairstyle and Hair Trial

What are you doing for your wedding hairstyle? Have you already had a hair trial? How did it go?

I had my hair and makeup trial yesterday. The airbrushed makeup looked great and survived a real cry test. The stylist didn't put much effort into my hair, though. I had most of my hair down in curls with the top section pulled back with a slight bump for volume because I don't have any bangs. The curls had fallen out within the hour. I know it's a trial, but if I wanted it to be light and easy, I could've tried it myself.

I sent pics to my MOH and BMs and my MOH wrote back and said it wasn't very bridal-y. And I guess that's true, but I really don't have any better ideas, and apparently neither does she because she didn't say anything else to me about it. I feel like I need to have my hair down because I don't have bangs, have a small face, a long neck (to me at least) and am wearing a strapless dress. That's a lot of skin and I think having my hair down will look better for photos.

I'm going to keep looking for new hairstyles I guess. Any suggestions though? Any advice to share?

Re: Hairstyle and Hair Trial

  • I wouldn't worry about it not looking "bridal" on it's own as long as it looks good on you. Your complete look with the dress, veil etc will be bridal overall.

Have you fussed with your hair while wearing your dress and other accessories? That can give you some direction. I was dead set on wearing my hair up until I saw everything together and am now going for wearing it down. When looking at hairstyles I found better down-dos for red-carpet hair, there isn't much variety listed as bridal. Maybe something old hollywood inspired?

  • I would definitely have concerns about your hair loosing its curl quickly.  My stylist recommended that I do my hair trial the same day as my second fitting so that I could see how it would look with my dress and veil.  I am definitely going to be doing this!

  • I would go again.I would contact her and say you feel you did not achieve the look that you feel comfortable in commiting to for the day of the wedding. I would look and bring pictures, and I would speak up during your trial. If you don't like the way something looks have her try something else etc until you get to something you like.  Keep in mind majority of the time they will not do the curls full out which may be why yours fell out so fast.

Are you on pinterest? I have a whole board of about wedding day style. It has numerous pictures of hairstyles that I like and will bring to my trial in two weeks.

My FIs cousins wife went with the hairstylist I have, and she said she was vocal during her appointment and that she didn't do the curls full out. HTH!

  • I will attest to Christine's pinterest board, it's awesome!  I did the same thing at my trial. I didn't have one look that I was absolutely in love with so I just showed my stylist all of the pix I had collected on pinterest and he designed a beautiful look.  I was lucky in that he got it right on the first try.  I also brought all of the pins I'm using(basically just bobby pins with crystals on them), veil and crystal hair comb to go over the veil.  I'm doing a low updo so the pins will be in the low curly bun thingy. The veil will get tucked in over that low bun and the crystal hair comb over the veil so they look connected.  I will take the veil out during the reception so my head is gonna be supah-dupah sparkly, lol.
  • I would definitely call the salon and tell them your hair fell within an hour. If you are 100% set on using that same salon I would ask them to do it again. Otherwise I would try a different place. Did the stylist know your hair doesn't hold a curl well?

I have not had my trial yet, but it is required at my salon. My hair is pin straight and super soft so it falls pretty quickly as well, so I am wearing it up, plus I know I will be dancing a lot and my hair will be gross by the end of the night if it is down. Have you considered doing it down, but to the side with cascading curls?

OH! Have you ever used the wand curling iron? My sister has one and it is honestly amazing. It is the only curling iron where I don't have to plaster my hair in hairspray to get it to hold a curl. She will over curl it for me at night, spray a little and by morning it looks gorgeous. I plan on bringing it with me to my trial to compare it to what my salon uses.

  • I'd definitely do another trial but, before you do, play around at home. I am wearing my hair up even though my dress is strapless. Yes, it's a bit of skin, but it actually looked really fantastic with my dress. My hair is super fine so it just falls out of curls within a matter of hours, no matter how much you spray it. I knew that, dancing all night, having it down wasn't an option. So maybe you can at least try putting your hair up yourself and wearing a strapless shirt or something and seeing how that looks. Then try it to the side. Then try it half up and down. Just to get ideas of what will work before you go to a stylist a second time.
  • Wearing your hair down does have a big risk of the curls falling out. My friend has thick hair and even her curls fell out really fast. That is why I'm wearing my hair up, because I'm worried about that! But I would def. go in again and get a re-do!

  • Well, unfortunately I don't really have the option for a re-do. I'm in Iowa and the wedding and salon are in Indiana. I do know she wasn't doing the full on hairstyle...but I was still disappointed with what I came back with, and that may have been more so that it just didn't look great on me and that FI didn't really love it.

I am reconsidering everything though. I think I might wear a different necklace - pearls instead of the simple chain with birthstone that I was going to wear - so maybe that will break up all the skin. Plus a friend made a good point that this is the only time I'm really going to have the chance to get really fancy hair (which is true - my hair is pretty simple and boring most of the time because I'm lazy), so I should really LOVE it. And I agree - especially if I'm paying that money for it.

I'm going to play around with basic ideas - side part, sideswept bun or curls, etc. I don't have bangs and my hair is only a few inches past shoulder height, so I don't really have a ton to work with. We shall see!

I'll post a pic of me from the hair and makeup (love the makeup!) trial within my main profile pic things.
