Looking for wedding cake savings

Is there a Christina O'malley in the world of wedding cakes? I need someone who can work with me and who may not own a huge midtown bakery, but has quality work.

My coordinator suggested Just Cake by Wendy.  I ultimately went with Flour Power, because I liked Ronda so much and she really worked with me on the price.  Since I got the fake cake, I think the price was about $3.30/slice.

Fancy Cakes Nola starts at $1.75 a slice. I didn't use them personally but she was very nice to deal with and I think remember seeing a good review on the board a while back.

  • Steer away from fancy cakes, their work is horrendous....Haydel's is great and affordable!
  • Gambino's is pretty reasonable. They quoted a cake for us around $2.75 a slice. Tastes great too!

  • We decided to skip the cake route and went with 4 dozen cupcakes from Haydel's and an 8-inch top tier cake for us to cut/eat. It was way cheaper than a full size cake and everyone loved that it was easy to eat and we will still were able to cut it for pictures. Just an idea. :)

  • I found Gambinos to be great to work with. Their price was great compared to other bakeries in town who wanted to charge a fortune. Mary Sue was great about helping me get the price to where I wanted it as well.

So what did it work out to if you don't mind my asking?  Per slice? (or for the whole cake if they priced it that way?)
  • I went with Gambino's too. We tasted the cake at several bridal shows and a few tastings on our own at the store and it was consisently good at each one. The lady (I think her name was Mary Sue) was wonderful to work with and I thought they were reasonable compared to many others we tried.  I think it worked out to $2-$2.50 a slice or thereabouts.
