Mt Vernon Caterers Ceased Operations and we are out $5,000 and a caterer

Hello Fellow Knot enthusiasts; My fiance and I just received notice that the contracted caterer we had; Mt Vernon Caterers of Baltimore have ceased operations and they still have our $5,000 security deposits!!!! Needless to say they will not be providing services for our May 2010 wedding and we are out $5,000. Does anyone have advice or have gone through a similar situation??? Thanks!

Ouch did they declare bankruptcy or are they just going out of business?  This actually happened to a friend of mine (in TX) their venue/ caterer is going through bankruptcy and they opted to change locations because they knew that nothing they had been promised before would be guaranteed.  IE the bankruptcy court is going to decide before their wedding date whether they have to liquidate or not or something.$5000 is a lot of money I think if I were you I would seek some legal advice....

I know last summer a few brides had issues with their caterer/venue going out of business.  You should DEFINITELY get your money back one way or another.  Have you had any contact with anybody who worked there?

That's terrible, I'm so sorry you're out so much money. I really don't know much about that kind of stuff, so I don't know what advice to give, I just wish you luck with getting it back. That caterer has had some really negative reviews on here in the past. So, not that it makes the monetary side of this suck any less, this may give you the opportunity to use a caterer with a good reputation. Please let us know when you're ready for other recommendations. Again, I'm sorry!

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I second the advice to get legal counsel, and if you need reccomendations for other caters, let us know!

Wow...so sorry! I would agree - seek legal advice...even if they file for bankruptcy, at least try to get on the list of people that they owe just in case...good luck!

Hello....I'm a bride in your shoes, however my wedding is in 19 days, October 10, 2009. They also got $5,000 from us w/ nothing but a letter saying we wouldn't see a dime in return. I believe after the wedding we are going to get a lawyer because right now I'm so busy w/ last min. wedding details. They won't return my calls or emails. There has to be someone we can report them to because I don't care what anyone says....$5,000 dollars is A LOT of money. Now I have to pay for another caterer & have the money in bascily 15 days. I think Mt. Vernon knew they where going under & took our depoists to try to stay afloat.
