AW: Delivered my first baby today...

It was super exciting!  Birth is such a crazy process.  This is my first week on the labor and delivery floor for third year medical school and it was great to get right in there!  As much fun as it was, I found myself longing to be the person I was handing the baby off to - I can't wait to be a pediatrician!

    wow that's awesome.  I watch a Baby Story and all that stuff..sometimes it seems bearable and other times not at all!  childbirth scares me.

    Yeah, birth is crazy.  I just can't believe what women are able to go through in order to bring that little person into the world.  It amazes me every time the strength we have.  But I have to admit, it terrifies me to think of when DH & I start our family.  Even though I know it happens, I've seen it, it boggles my mind that something the size of a large grapefruit coming out of ....

    Bah Kimbrout, what hospital are you at right now??  I'm doing my practicum in L&D- I love it so much!  I'll be the one handing the baby to YOU haha.  I'm thinking of doing peds for a few years first to keep up my general nursing skills and knowledge, but within the next 2-3 years I want to be a certified L&D nurse and eventually get my degree in midwifery.  Did you cry?  The first I saw was at UMMS, and I cried (not like sobbing, but it was such a moving experience!)!  I've seen so many now, but the other week, after spending a really long (unmedicated, in the tub!) labor with my patient, I did have to fight back tears during the delivery.  It was just special moment and I was glad to have been there with them.  The dad was so cute, he took our picture with mom & baby (it was their first baby).  PS- first time dads are the CUTEST.  They are my favorite.

    I love first time dad's who CARE - not the ones that couldn't be bothered and answer their CELL PHONES while the mother is huffing and puffing away.  I could have backhanded this guy the other week.  The dad today cut the cord and was so cute!!I cried the first one I saw.  Today I was so focused on not dropping the baby ;)  They are so slippery!  And my hands were all lubed up from pushing (use the lube to help stretch mom out and prevent tears). I'm at Mercy right now.  I wanted to be there for L&D because they have more delivers and I had a better chance of actually delivering a baby.  It was time for sign out today, so there weren't any residents in the delivery room.  It was just me and the attending, which meant that I got to be a lot more involved than I usually am.  Ahhh babies.... :):):)

    Do you want to chat off the board?  I don't know, something about dropping peoples names on here makes me a little nervous.  I'd love to talk with you more though!  I'm on FB, are we friends?  We could chat there!

    Haha kimbrout, no problem.  I understand.  I don't really have any TK friends on Fb, since I really just started getting into it this summer.  I'm under the Baltimore knotties group.  I will look for you!

    Tiff - that's so exciting.  congrats.  It's really interesting listening (reading) to what you guys have to say - my sister is preggo with the first baby of the family.

    Tiff - I'm getting there.  We don't have any 'kids' in our family so I've never really been around babies and newborns, so I'm a little nervous.  I'm super excited for my sister and I think I'll be way more ready once the wedding is over.  I feel like my life doesn't really exist until after the honeymoon.  Nothing has been planned past that...it's kinda weird.  Sorry for that rant.  I'm excited, but I don't know if I'm ready.

    Thats awesome!!! I've wanted to be a L&D nurse ever since I had my daughter (she was the whole reason for going into nursing school). Now I'm just waiting for a chance to get some experience in the field. I'm working at a skilled rehab center hoping for some new grad openings in the local hospitals. I have to tell you... I'm about 1000 times jealous of you right now :)

    Tiff that's so awesome!!  My friend just had her baby last weekend, and I so wanted to be there for the labor.  She was in labor for 24 hours (and 6 days late) and after being in labor for about 19hrs they gave her an epidural (she really wanted to do it naturally).  I can't wait to meet her baby girl ;)

    Congrats! I am a nursing student and I did L&D at Laurel. I love the babies but birth is so scary...
