Dessert Reception?

My mother is paying for my entire wedding, and she does not have much money. Have you heard of a dessert reception? My question: Would you be offended if you were invited to a wedding, and rather than full dinner and dancing, it was more relaxed with background music and many desserts. This would take place after normal meal hours. Our ceremony would be closer to 7:30PM.What are your thoughts?

Ohhh that sounds delicious! What hall offers that? As long as you had chocolate strawberries I would be in heaven.

As a person who LOVES dessert I would be thrilled. Especially if it starts late enough in the evening so I could get dinner before coming.

My understanding is that this is perfectly acceptable as long ad you put on the invitation that a dessert reception will follow so that people know to eat beforehand. Congrats to you for doing something that can fit in your budget instead of doing something grand that doesn't- it takes a lot of restraint to do that.

I am having a smaller wedding, so I am not sure of a hall who offers it-but it will be at the "hall" in my church, and a lot of my friends/family is offering to make something. And yes, chocolate covered stawberries for sure.

I would love it, personally! I think people will dig the idea, they can still have most of the day to themselves and then in the evening attend your ceremony and dessert reception. Just make sure you let people know, so that they don't show up expecting to be fed a full meal. (You would think with a late time, people would get it, but believe me, they won't)

I think that sounds great as long as, like pp said, you specify so people don't come starving :)

I would love it, but I love dessert. I agree with pp, just make sure people know ahead of time, so they can eat.

I have been to 2 weddings like this but they both had ceremonies that were at 8pm and they worked out just fine. I think if your ceremony is at the earliest 7:30 it would be ok, but I'm not sure what you mean by "closer to 7:30". Any earlier than 7:30 and it would seem to overlap dinner time too much.

I would say do what your budget can afford.  No one is going to be offended receiving deserts unless you serve them at dinner time at they weren't forwarned.  I don't think it's as normal in the midwest as it is in the south and other areas, but I think it's kind of cool.  I would have some cool pies, cakes, and throw in a few appetizers too, like veggies and dip or cheese and crackers. I think that seems kind of fun!

i would totally be in to this- especially instead of appetizers. and you could have some super sweet (no pun intended) reception card wording!

I think as long as your guests are clear about needing to eat dinner before they attend, then it will be great.  I think it's a really unique idea and you could make it very swanky and romantic and relaxed.  In addition to dessert, assorted cheese, fruit, and nuts would be really yummy.  I would love going to this type of event.  Why not?
