Detroit/Belle Isle Opinions

Hello ladies,I am currently living in Arizona and am not able to come to Michigan to view any sites before we book. I need as much advice as I can get!We are pretty settled on the Detroit Yacht Club but neither of us have ever been to Belle Isle. Our families keep reminding us of how dangerous Detroit is, and we are very worried no one will come because they won't want to drive at night through the city.Is Detroit (and Belle Isle) really that scary? Should I look elsewhere? I would greatly appreciate all of your comments and opinions! Thanks so much!!!Also, if anyone has any advice or comments about weddings at the DYC, I would love to hear them as well! Thanks again.

I am biased because I LOVE the DYC! :-) It is beautiful and you will have a beautiful wedding. We almost picked it for ours! We ended up going with the Colony Club which is downtown as well. I wouldn't worry about it. You are going to have some people complain about coming downtown but ultimately they will go and they will be fine. ;-) I definitely think you should go with DYC.

You have to be careful no matter where you are. I've always heard wonderful reviews on DYC. There are some beautiful areas of Detroit. It's a city...you'd have to be careful in any city in the U.S.! It saddens me that Detroit has such a bad rap and people are so afraid to go there. They are really missing out! If guests want to be there, they'll be there. Just make sure you give them a good map to the venue like you would any other place.

LOL, detroit is like any other city. Downtown in fine, outside of downtown is a complete shithole. The most beautiful locations for a wedding are downtown though.

OMG, seriously? Ok. The Yacht Club is beautiful. If it were that dangerous, people wouldn't dock their yacht's/boats out there. To get to Belle, there isn't that much driving through the city. You get off the freeway, onto Jefferson, drive straight, make a right and you are on Belle.Detroit is just as dangerous as any other city. Born and raised and now living in the suburbs, I hear this crap alot. But unfortuantely I partially understand people's concerns who aren't familiar with Detroit. No one is going to come up in the Yacht Club and start "busting caps". My prom was there, and it was AMAZING!My BF is getting married at the Belle Conservatory Garden next July and having her reception at the Belle Casino.Plenty of brides have their wedding out at Belle. The Island has security and police. Please don't be discouraged to have your wedding there.HTH!

LMAO! Bustin' caps! The DYC is so beautiful and so is Belle Isle. My top siggy pic is taken there from our epics. I would've loved to have our wedding in Detroit. My goal was to have the ceremony/reception in a hotel because of so many OOT guests and drunks. lol I'm Irish...it's what we do!

I am having my ceremony and reception at the DYC on Belle Isle and it is beautiful!! Julia and Jennifer in catering are great to work with! They always respond to emails very quickly and will meet with you any time. I am pretty sure I called Julia just to vent about something totally random not wedding related (For some reason I thought she would be the one to call lol) and she stayed on the line to listen! Belle Isle is such a nice area I don't think you have anything to worry about! When is the wedding?

Thank you so much everyone! I actually just moved from Philadelphia to Arizona, and also agree that there are areas of Detroit (just like Philly) that aren't as dangerous as people think. It is a city, and there are safe areas. I just am completely unaware of what Belle Isle is like. So hearing all of these positive comments will definitely help me make up my mind. Thanks again! Almay86- We are looking at September 17, 2010. Hopefully the weather is nice! We hear it got cold fast this year :(

Detroit has a bad reputation but its not like you will be hanging out in the back alleys of neighborhoods. Downtown is as safe as any big city's downtown. While I've never been to the DYC, I've been to plenty of events in Detroit and never felt 'unsafe'. You can get hurt, mugged, etc. anywhere, a 'better' zip code doesn't = safety.

It sounds like you already got some good advice...but I just wanted to second everyone's opinions! My wedding and reception are at the yacht club too and so far they have been great to work with. It is a beautiful place, as is the rest of Belle Isle. There are TONS of great pictures spots on the island and like everyone said it really is not that bad, especially at the Yacht Club. Good luck with the rest of the planning!!
