XP: Centerpieces....interesting ideas?

Ok so I just got off the phone with my mom and I'm alittle mad at her because I'm trying to make her feel involved but she is telling other people FI and I ideas.
Anyway, our tables for the wedding are named after the cities that I and/or FI have lived in. For example for Detroit we are going to have a car(s) for the centerpiece and for Flint, MI we are going to have the letters of the school we meet at as the centerpiece...etc.
We are going to include a little card that explains the centerpiece at the table and how it connects to me and/or FI.

Do you ladies think this is a good idea or not??
My mom thinks that it would be to "out of the orinary" and people will not understand the centerpieces. She wants me to do the traditional cake, candy, flowers, or candles.

Please, I need opinions.

I think it's a very good idea and very creative!  Why be boring and normal and just put a number on the table?

I like it! It definitely personalizes it more. We're doing the same centerpieces for all the tables but the table numbers are going to be unique & significant. I think adding a personal touch to a wedding is a GREAT idea, regardless of whether or not your mom thinks it's traditional or not. Stick to what YOU (and your FI) want! xo

I LOVE your idea.  We are doing matching centerpieces but unique "numbers".  I think it's cool to have different centerpieces.

I love that!-- Each of our tables are named after something important to us-- ie the place of our first date, where we got engaged. etc. I love your idea of actually creating a centerpiece around that!!

I love that idea! Maybe around it you could do something traditional- universal on all table to make mom happy too? (Like candles/flower petals, etc)
