Expanding on 'what are you scared of'

Situation: You are home alone and it is dark out.  Somebody comes to the door that you are not expecting.  Do you open the door or no?

Re: Expanding on 'what are you scared of'

Hell no. I don't even answer the door during the day if I'm not expecting anyone. I always peek in the case that it's the neighbor or something.

Nope. I don't answer the door ever if i do't know the person and I'm not expecting anyone. Thats a great way to 1. get raped and robbed, 2. Be lectured about coming to Jesus for 2 hours.

    No thanks on both counts!

Thank you guys for making me feel like I"m not crazy!  I watch a lot of the crime shows as well and husband was trying to make me feel like it was just me during a conversation yesterday.

I do the same thing, LOL!  If someone buzzes my apartment and I wasn't expecting anyone, I don't let them in.  If they knock on my door, I tip toe to the door and look out the peep hole first.

I'm also obsessive about using the chain on my door.  FI thinks it's weird, butI live in an apartment, so I feel like a lot of people (maintenance staff, leasing office, former residents, former residents' significant others, etc.) could potentially have a key to my place.  Door lock and deadbolt aren't enough, I need the chain to feel safe!

When I lived in an apartment I had a security bar that I put under the door handle where if you try to open the door it pushes against the floor.  It made me feel a little safer and would have it on everytime I was at home.

One night, husband forgot something when he was over and tried to let himself back in while I was showering.  I almost beat the crap out of him because he scared me so bad!

I don't even go to the door becasue I am scred someone will hear me tip toeing to the door and will shoot through the door! Yes, I am a bit PARANOID!

Hahaha, this is making me feel so much better!  I do this all the time.  Just the other day I saw someone walking up to my porch and I bolted to the laundry room and shut the door and hid out for probably 5 minutes...and it was only the mailmanEmbarassed

I guess I'm alone because I would answer the door.  Our family room has a picture window that faces out front...just feet away from the front door.  So I'm pretty sure they would be able to tell someone is home from the lights, TV, etc.  I have an extremely friendly dog, but I love that he barks when the door rings and he sounds mean....although he would just lick them to death.  Also, he is large and 90lbs, so intimidating to someone who doesn't know off the bat that he's friendly.

However, I always grab my phone when I get the door so I have it on me, just in case.

Ha! This is totally me- I will run past windows in case a sniper is outside!

If someone unexpected knocks, I stop wherever I'm at and don't move unless it's to tiptoe to where I'm away from a window. It's like freeze tag!

I lived alone for 11 years before DH moved in, and a couple of semesters in a single dorm at college made me terrified of noises and random people, not to mention the dark! To this day I sleep with the tv on all night so I don't hear anything! lol

I'm with you Julie.  Maybe it's cause we grew up in Plymouth/Canton :)

I always answer the door, even if I'm not expecting someone.  But, I generally carry my cell to the door w/ me if it's after dark.  Otherwise, I guess I'm a sitting duck for all those wackos out there.

Yeah I would totally ignore it.... maybe turn other lights on in the back of the house and have my tv on, that way if its a potential robber, they know someone is home and if its someone wanting to bug me/sell me something then they'll think im busy or just cant hear them.

I never answer the door especially at night.  There's a window that looks on to the front porch and I make sure to close the blinds when I'm on the computer so if someone walks up to the door they won't see me sitting at the desk.  In the summer I like to keep the front door open but unless they see me I still won't answer it.  Fi thinks I'm crazy but when I have the front door open I keep the screen door locked.  It might not keep anyone out but at least I would be able to hear if someone tried to open it.

I'm with Julie & Melhunny. Maybe it's because I"m older and grew up in Detroit. I have a motion sensor front porch light so it's never dark when I look out the small window in my front door. I would imagine some of you would be afraid to live in my house because my side and back doors have 5 glass panels making up the entire door, with wood in between.

The answer (if you live in a house) is to lock the screen/storm door when everyone's home, or you are not expecting your husband or fiance to come home soon. This way there is always something locked between you and any visitor.

As far as the back door is concerned, my next door neighbor has uber-bright spot lights on his garage. It lights up my backyard like daytime, so no worries, LOL.

no.  just, no.  I don't answer the door at night if I am not expecting anybody.  I'm way too paranoid for that, even if I know the screen is locked.  I don't check either - the is no peephole in our door and there is a little window next to it, and I'm sure someone would see me, and possibly try to force their way in.
