Dress Shopping

Ok, so I have a year and 2 months til the big day and I'm working on getting my fitness on so I don't want to go dress shopping until I get into better shape. I have a lot of time, but I know it goes fast so I'm wondering what's the recommended time to go dress shopping?

I ordered my dress about 14 months ahead of time.  I ordered for the size I was when I was dress shopping knowing that they told me they could take it in up to 2 sizes.  I ended up losing 17 pounds before the wedding and the seamstress did a phenomenal job altering the dress and it fit like a glove!

I have a short engagement, so I had to rush with the dress.  I'd recommend starting to look now so you can have a fun and relaxing experience.  Don't let anyone pressure you into ordering earlier than you are comfortable.  In regard to sizing, my dress fit like a glove when I purchased it (at Camille's where I could try on the actual dress in different sizes).  I have lost weight, but am not worried b/c I am having a corset back put into my ballgown.

I think it depends on how much weight you plan to lose, and how much you realistically see yourself losing.  Ball gowns are forgiving; sheaths not so much.  A lot will depend on the style you are leaning towards.  The bridal consultant said the seamstress could work with me in the +/- 15 lbs range.  Some are miracle workers.

I got engaged in November & I'm not getting married until next July.  So far I have only gone dress shopping twice (back in March or April), but I wasn't stressing myself out at all about finding the perfect dress because I knew I didn't want to commit to anything that far in advance.  I knew that if I did, I would probably fall in love with something new that is in a magazine & want to change my mind (I'm VERY indecisive).  When I did go, there were a few dresses that I really liked, but nothing that I fell in love with... Being that my wedding is jsut about a year away, I am planning to get a dress sometime this summer, either this month or August...

One of the shops I went to said that it is best to order your dress at least eight months before your wedding date, so you still have quite a bit of time...  It can't hurt though to go try on a few dresses just to get a sense of what styles look good on you because what you think will, may not...

    Good luck with everything!!

Great timing! Dress shopping is so much fun!

You can start looking now, you have plenty of time and don't want to rush it. And then you can place your order at the 8-10-12 month mark.

Good luck with the weight loss. But find a dress that you love on how you look when you are ready to buy. Don't buy a "this will look perfect once I drop 10 pounds" etc)

Also, the year-ish point is best to start seriously looking.

I had found a dress once we got engaged. But never planned to buy my dress at more than a year out. But I kept looking at that dress. Thinking it was the right one. When I got to the year point, I got tired of it. And started searching everywhere to see other dresses. And found MY dress one of the last stores.

I am so happy that I never bought the dress that I had my eye on for so long, because I would have regretted it.

A year or thereabouts is the PERFECT time to start looking. And when you see it you will know. Maybe not at that exact moment. But maybe when you leave the store. Or when you go to another store, and can't get THE dress out of your mind. That's when you know.

    Have fun! Good luck!

Im kind of in the same situation, we are getting married next July and I went shopping around in NY while I was there, now back in South Carolina I think I am going to hit up a few more places so I can compare prices/styles I want to lose a little weight myself in the next year I am hoping for at least 10lbs, so I was going to wait as well, until I went somewhere that told me I needed to order by September, then I started to freak out a bit haha.

i got married in October and started looking in March...although I had looked on the internet and magazines for quite some time...but march was the first time I physically looked.

I ordered my dress at the end of March/beginning of April and it came in in June.

Wow, thanks everyone. I will definitely start looking within the next couple of weeks just to get the ball rolling.
