Any astronomy nerds out there?..either way, this is kinda cool..

I happen to be a wee bit of an astronomy nerd. I love stargazing, pointing out constellations, looking through my telescope....and LOVE meteor showers!!!

There happens to be the Perseids meteor shower coming up on Aug12. Start watching around 10pm. It will peak after midnight. This will be  a great year to watch them. This paticular shower has one of the biggest meteors per hour, about 60, and there will be little light from the moon to get in the way!

Sorry for that brief bought of nerdness..lol. Just thought someone out there might be interested. Its very awesome to watch.

That's the night of my rehearsal dinner...what a great way to end the night! Thanks for the info.  FI has a telescope, I wonder if that would make it any better?

Thanks for passing this along. I'll try to remember to watch. I remember driving out to East Lansing the night of my prom and seeing tons of shooting stars. No further info needed!

Very cool, I'm a big physics dork in general. One year during our annual trip to way north New York there was the Perseids meteor shower. It was amazing up there. Dead center of the Adirondack mountains, laying on the dock, TONS of stars, you could see the milky way and then the shooting stars. Amazing!

ETA: I just realized I'll actually be up north the 12th - 15th, perfect!

Maybe you know this...someone recently told me that at some point in the near future, Mars will be super close to earth and will be visible to the naked eye.  The closest we will ever experience in our lifetimes.  Do you know when that is?

I would say viewing with the naked eye is best because then you get the best view of the sky. Grab a lawn chair or blanket, and lay down and watch! If im not mistaken, I think looking to the northeast is the best area to view, but keep your eyes open!

Also, about Mars. That may have stemed from an email from a few years back when Mars was very viewable. I do know that around the 8th and 12-13th this month are good days to view Mars! The 8th, you can see Venus Mars and Saturn very brightly, and the 12-13th (same night as the shower!) you can see all 3 planets very close to each other. They will be near the moon. Venus will be the brightest, then Saturn, then Mars. Thats a great time to set up a telescope...even if you a failry cheap one (like me) you can still get some great views!

Glad so many people are interested, lol. Enjoy!!
